PoE Atlas Strategies Guide: Optimizing Your Endgame Map Progression

The Atlas Skill Tree is one of the things that you need to be acquainted with when playing Path of Exile. This is because the feature itself changes how the endgame works.

By allocating certain nodes on the tree, you can influence what type of content gets juiced up in the process. Do you want to focus on Blight and farm as many oils to sell for a profit? How about defeating Harbinger Monsters for a chance to get mirror shards to drop?

Whatever content you wish to do a lot of in the endgame, the Atlas Skill Tree is quite important in that regard. So, if you want to learn the best PoE Atlas Strategies, then read further! I will go over some strategies that have made players rich, printing Divine Orbs like crazy!

How the PoE Atlas Works in the Endgame

Before we begin, it is important to note that this guide was written in Patch 3.27, so some pieces of information may have changed in the new league by the time you read this. That said, there are things that you need to know about the current Atlas of Worlds in Path of Exile.

For one, you no longer need the Orb of Unmaking to respec points. All you need now is to spend Gold for respecs, which you can obtain readily from defeating monsters or opening treasure chests in maps.

If you are unsatisfied with your current Atlas Skill Tree point allocation, simply talk to Kirac for an easy respec of those points, so you can re-allocate them as you see fit.

In addition, the Atlas Skill Tree lets you save three different presets, allowing you to easily change atlas strategies on the fly. You will start with the first save slot by default, and you unlock the second and third presets by completing 50 and 100 bonus objectives on the Atlas, respectively.

Now, if you have not played Path of Exile since a couple of leagues ago, there is another substantial change to the game. Most specifically, the main mechanic from the Settlers of Kalguur League has now gone core, which means that you can send ships from Kingsmarch to scour for valuable items and resources when they come back.

All of this is to say that the Atlas of Worlds has become much more accessible to new players. Don’t be intimidated by the Atlas Skill Tree because it’s actually quite easy to navigate, especially if you already have an idea of what endgame content you want to run when you reach maps.

Atlas Skill Tree Basics

One look at the Atlas Skill Tree, and it will send fear into the hearts of Path of Exile beginners. But, just like with the Passive Tree, the Atlas Skill Tree is quite easy to navigate. All you have to think about is what type of content you wish to run in the endgame.

Basically, the nodes that you spend your atlas passive points on will directly influence almost all maps in the game, with the exception of the Abyssal Depths, Blighted Maps, Synthesized Maps, and Vaal Side Areas. This means that if you have a capable build, you can use the Atlas Skill Tree to greatly juice up your favorite content while running T17 maps like Fortress and Ziggurat.

If you are completely new to the game, there are three types of nodes that you can find on the PoE Atlas Skill Tree. These are:

• Minor Nodes: This is represented by the small nodes that connect to various points in the Atlas Skill Tree. Minor Nodes often provide an increased chance of an additional map to drop, as well as increased Scarabs found in your maps.
• Notable Nodes: These nodes have slightly larger icons compared to the minor nodes. As such, Notable Nodes provide much better effects. Secret Compartments, for example, is a notable passive that gives you a small chance to open a Strongbox again.
• Keystone Nodes: Just like in the Passive Tree, the Atlas Skill Tree also has keystones that you can allocate. These nodes grant effects that you cannot find anywhere else, though some of them do come with apparent downsides that you must consider before putting a skill point on them. For instance, “Singular Focus” is a keystone that greatly increases your chance for favored maps to drop, but it also affects non-favored maps as well, turning them into basic PoE currency instead of actual maps.

Map Device

The Map Device is another thing that you should be familiar with when it comes to the Atlas. This is because you will find two sets of icons that you should enable, depending on which nodes you have taken on the Atlas Skill Tree.

First, there is the Searing Exarch and Eater of Worlds Altars. If you have “Wrath of the Cosmos” allocated, you must click on the Searing Exarch icon so that its altars will appear while you are mapping.

Conversely, select The Eater of Worlds icon on the Map Device if you have allocated nodes that specifically have something to do with the said pinnacle boss. For example, when you have taken the “Eldritch Gaze” keystone passive, make sure to select The Eater of Worlds icon before running your favorite map.

The second set of icons that you should be aware of on the Map Device is the Atlas Skill Tree presets. As mentioned earlier, you can set three completely different presets for your preferred passive nodes on the Atlas Skill Tree. Just ensure that you highlight the correct one by clicking on the numbered preset that you want to use.

PoE Atlas Strategies

Okay, so we have covered the basics, it’s time to go over some very popular PoE Atlas Strategies. Keep in mind that new nodes may be introduced on every PoE league start, but some of the nodes that will be mentioned here should still be available (unless otherwise stated).

Since you have three presets to work with, you can choose a few of these strategies and save them accordingly. So, without further ado, here are some proven PoE Atlas Strategies for Patch 3.27:

1. Map Sustain and Quantity

If you are going to create your first character in the league, you’ll need to allocate nodes that provide you with a means to not only farm maps but also sustain them. This particular Atlas Strategy in PoE has the following nodes allocated to make that a reality:

• Unwavering Vision: This keystone passive makes most Fragments (like Scarabs and Vaal Fragments) defunct. In exchange, you will get 20 free atlas skill points to work with, making it an incredible keystone to allocate on your first character.
• Bold Undertakings: When you have “Fortune Favours the Brave” enabled as a map crafting option, it will apply an additional option (on top of what it already offers). In other words, you get two crafting options for the price of one. Take note that this keystone also increases the price of Fortune Favours the Brave, so have enough Chaos Orbs to keep it enabled.
• Shaping the Mountains: Provides you with a small chance to make a map crafting option free upon completing a map. Besides that, Shaping the Skies will occasionally make T1-T15 maps become a tier higher, so if you are struggling to farm T16 maps for some reason, this keystone passive should help you with that.
• Tamper-Proof: Strongboxes found in your maps are already rare and corrupted, alleviating the need for Orbs of Alchemy and Vaal Orbs.

Start by allocating Unwavering Vision first to get 20 free Atlas skill points. After that, allocate both Shaping the Mountains and Shaping the Skies to help you get a healthy supply of maps. If you are still struggling, allocate the “Adjacent Map Drop Chance” minor nodes near the starting point as well.

When you are still in the lower-tier maps, take the nodes that have something to do with Shrines, such as Drawn to Power and Syncretism. They empower Shrines to provide more powerful and lasting effects.

After getting enough Chaos Orbs, take Bold Undertakings at the center of the Atlas Skill Tree. Once allocated, leave “Fortune Favours the Brave” enabled until you spec out of this atlas strategy.

If you have decked out your character with the best PoE items, then proceed to allocating the Strongbox nodes, starting with “Twice Tempted,” then followed by “Tamper-Proof” and “Secret Compartments.”

I highly recommend that you choose this particular Atlas Strategy in PoE if this is your first-ever character in a new league.

2. Blight and Beast

After you have a good supply of maps, it’s time to get serious about what endgame content you should run. In my opinion, if you want the absolute best way to earn PoE Currency early on, you should think about completing Blighted Maps.

I know that Blight is not the type of thing that a lot of people like to do in Path of Exile, but you cannot deny that it is definitely profitable. Why? Well, for starters, you get various oils that are used to anoint passive skills on amulets. Additionally, these oils can be used on your rings to empower certain towers, which should be helpful when tackling Blighted Maps.

Another incentive to doing Blight over other endgame content in PoE is that it is not that gear-dependent. You just have to set up the right towers, and you should be able to clear Blighted Maps relatively easily.

If Blight is not to your liking, this particular Atlas Strategy also has “Beast” nodes allocated. Start by taking Eternal Hunt so that Einhar will have a much higher chance of appearing in your maps.

After that, allocate “Big Game” to replace some yellow beasts on your maps with red beasts. Next, head all the way to the upper-left corner of the Atlas Skill Tree and get “Natural Selection.” This should make rare beasts like the Craicic Chimeral and Black Morrigan appear more often.

Speaking of rare beasts, here is a brief list of the most profitable beasts that you can farm in Path of Exile:

• Vivid Vulture: A rare beast that allows you to reroll an implicit modifier on a synthesized item.
• Craicic Chimeral: Lets you imprint a magic item. This is quite useful for endgame crafting since you can just use the imprint to redo your crafted item if you did not get the modifiers that you want.
• Black Morrigan: Among the beasts that you can capture in PoE, the Black Morrigan is one of the most versatile. It not only has the effect of Hinekora’s Lock, but it also lets you modify an item to get the maximum possible links, craft an Aspect Skill onto a suitable item, and split an item into three.
• Fenumal Plagued Arachnid: This beast is an ingredient for “splitting items” via beastcrafting.
• Primal Crushclaw: When used as a beastcrafting recipe, you gain a free use of every map crafting option. Very useful for early-to-mid-game mapping.

3. Ore + Scarabs

Sending shipments in Kingsmarch is one profitable endeavor. To get the most out of those shipments, you need to have certain types of ore with you, which you can find on maps. Allocating certain nodes on the Atlas Skill Tree increases your chance of getting ores to spawn in maps significantly.

This particular PoE Atlas Strategy revolves around that particular type of content. Begin by allocating “Prospector’s Luck” to have a considerably increased chance for your maps to contain ore deposits.

From there, go to the middle-left portion of the tree and take “Fortune’s Favour” and “Yield Upon Yield.” The former raises the chance for Bismuth and Verisium Ore deposits to spawn, while the latter almost always ensures that your maps contain at least a couple of ore deposits.

If you are wondering why these ore deposits are for, the ore that you can get from them can be refined and used for endgame upgrades, as well as shipments in various ports in Path of Exile.

This atlas strategy has some nodes that influence Scarab drops as well. For instance, “Remarkable Relics” improves the odds of having rare scarabs drop while you are mapping.

Ambush Scarabs sell like pancakes due to the fact that a lot of players love opening Strongboxes in T16 and T17 maps. If you don’t plan on using them, you can sell the Ambush Scarabs for Divine Orbs, especially when you trade them in bulk.

4. Harbinger

Harbinger is a type of endgame content in Path of Exile that is loved by many endgame map enjoyers. The reason for this is that the mechanic itself spawns quite a lot of monsters on the map, effectively increasing the chance of obtaining more valuable loot.

This Atlas Strategy in PoE focuses on improving Harbinger over others. Take Ominous Arrival to get one additional Harbinger to spawn in your maps. Next, go slightly higher in the Atlas Skill Tree, and then allocate all of the nodes that lead to “Unspeakable Offensive.” The said notable node makes currency shards dropped by Harbingers transform into actual currency instead.

Once that is done, spend some points to get to the center circle that contains the “First Wave” notable node. This provides a considerable chance for a Harbinger boss to spawn, giving more valuable loot.

The Harbinger Atlas Strategy is best combined with increased pack size and quantity via map modifiers. Hence, always run this strategy with a juiced-up T16 or T17 map.

Tips for PoE Atlas Strategies

1. Unlock All Your Points First: Complete your Atlas bonus objectives to earn your passive skill points. Pay close attention to the objectives so that you’ll know which type of map to run (white, yellow, or red corrupted) to accomplish them.
2. Make a Beeline for Unwavering Vision: The Unwavering Vision keystone passive is a must-have early on in the league. This is because it gives you 20 free passive skill points to allocate, depending on your needs. Just make sure to remove it once you are ready to run juiced maps.
3. Always do ‘Alch-and-Go’: Using Cartographer’s Chisels and Orbs of Alchemy to juice up your maps with modifiers is a good way to start your atlas journey. This is the “basic” method of juicing and is okay to do on your first character.
4. Blight and Beasts Are Profitable: These types of content should help you farm considerable amounts of currency at the beginning. If you don’t like to do any of them, you could switch to Harvest and Strongboxes, provided that you are strong enough to defeat the monsters within.
5. Utilize All Atlas Skill Presets: You have a few presets to work with, so be sure to use each one of them. Save a preset for map sustain, early-game farming, and farming endgame content like Delirium and Harbinger.
6. Run T14 Maps (At Least): Tier 14 maps provide a great way to earn currency with monsters that are not too incredibly difficult to defeat. Once you can eliminate map monsters with relative ease, then and only then should you switch to higher-tier maps.
7. Only Do T17 Maps If: T17 maps should only be attempted when your character is armed to the teeth. If you die too often, then that is a clear indication that T17 is too powerful for you.
