You’re probably aware of the name itself. That is because it’s actually the name of the same event last year, although this time, there are some noteworthy changes, especially to the different ascendancy classes.

What is the Legacy of Phrecia Event in Path of Exile?

Path of Exile’s Legacy of Phrecia event is a temporary affair that lasts for three weeks. This time around, the event is scheduled to launch on January 29, at 1 PM PST. The Legacy of Phrecia is set to conclude on February 19, at the exact same time it was launched.

For those who have not participated in the said event last year, Legacy of Phrecia allows developers to give you a taste of concepts that are not available in the base game. This includes an entirely new endgame progression system that forgoes the Atlas Passive Tree for the “Idols” system. Besides that, you can choose 19 different ascendancy classes for each of the base classes in PoE!

Speaking of which, the developers have made some noteworthy changes to the ascendancy classes. These will be covered in the later sections of this Path of Exile guide, so do stick around to learn more.

PoE Legacy of Phrecia Idols Explained –New Progression and Customization System

As previously mentioned, the Idols System will effectively replace the Atlas Passive Tree to influence your endgame progression and farming strategies in the Legacy of Phrecia event.

After placing your map in the Map Device, you will be given an interface that is similar to the one pictured above. The things that you see on there represent the various Idols that you can use. Idols are essentially items that grant different modifiers on your maps. Here is a brief rundown:

• Minor Idols: The smallest idols of the bunch. Minor idols are favored because they take so little space yet give some incredible mods for their respective slots.
• Kamasan Idols: Slightly more powerful than minor idols, which is signified by their bigger stature. Kamasan Idols take up 2x1 spaces in the UI, so you can only fit so many of them at a time.
• Noble Idols: Similar to Kamasan Idols in strength and potency of modifiers, albeit Noble Idols take up 1x2 spaces in the UI.
• Burial Idols: These idols are large and take up a 3x1 space in the UI. To reflect their bigger stature, the strength of the mods they provide is much higher compared to the previous idols.
• Totemic Idols: Taking 1x3 slots in the UI, Totemic Idols provide you with a much higher chance of getting extra content while mapping (ex. Abyss, Alva, Rogue Exile).
• Conqueror Idols: These idols grant the best possible modifiers on your maps, with the highest intensity compared to the others. The Conqueror Idols take up 2x2 slots in the Idol Inventory.

You will begin your endgame journey in the Legacy of Phrecia event with an Idol Inventory that has 20 unlocked slots. You can unlock more slots by completing the bonus objectives to progress your Atlas depending on the tier of your map:

• Tier 1 to 5 (White Maps): Kill the map boss while running a map of Magic rarity (or higher)
• Tier 6 to 10 (Yellow Maps): Kill the map boss while running a map of Rare rarity (or higher)
• Tier 11 to 16 (Red Maps): Kill the map boss while running a Rare and Corrupted map.

If you want to complete the bonus objective for red maps, you must use an Orb of Alchemy on the map itself to turn it into a yellow item (rare). After that, spend a Vaal Orb to corrupt it. When doing the latter, make sure that it results in modifiers that your build can actually run. For instance, if you are playing a melee build like the Eviscerate Gladiator, it might not be the best idea to use a map with “Reflects Physical Damage” as one of its modifiers.

Lastly, Idols in the Legacy of Phrecia event cannot be modified in any way. Unlike maps, you cannot use certain PoE Currency, like Chaos Orbs, to change the modifiers on the Idols. In other words, what you see is what you get when it comes to the Idols that you have obtained while mapping.

How PoE Idols Are Acquired and Used

Idols during the Legacy of Phrecia event for Path of Exile can be acquired randomly while mapping. The drop chance for these idols is affected by item rarity and item quantity, which means that juicing up your maps will certainly have an effect.

If you are having trouble getting idols by eliminating normal and rare monsters, you may have better luck defeating the map bosses. This is because map bosses have a 50% chance to drop a random idol. Because of this, boss rushing is a viable strategy if you are still fishing for the right idols to use for your setup.

Okay, so you have obtained some idols. What should you do next? When interacting with your Map Device, you will see a special inventory that houses your idols on the left side of the screen. You must place the idols you wish to use on those empty slots.

You will have 20 slots to work with at the beginning. However, you can unlock additional slots by completing Atlas Bonus Adjectives (such as the ones mentioned earlier).

Once you have placed the idols in their respective slots, the modifiers that they provide will be active on the next maps that you run. Fortunately, the idols are not a “one-time” thing like Scarabs, which means that they continue to exist in the Idol Inventory even after completing every map.

Alternate Ascendancy Classes in PoE Legacy of Phrecia Overview

One of the reasons why the Legacy of Phrecia event exists for Path of Exile is to let developers give you a glimpse of their wildest ideas that are too powerful for the base game. Some of these ideas are special ascendancy classes not found in the standard leagues.

That said, there are about 19 alternate ascendancies during the event. You can still begin the event with any of the base classes. However, the ascendancy classes that will be presented to you after completing the Trial of Ascendancy are vastly different from what you are used to.

Differences Between the Standard and Alternate Ascendancies in Legacy of Phrecia

While you can begin the event with any of the base classes, such as the Marauder, Ranger, Witch, Shadow, Templar, Duelist, and Scion, the ascendancy classes you can choose from are vastly different. You can still choose three different ascendancies for each of the aforementioned classes, with the exception of the Scion, who only has one.

There are a couple of notable differences between the standard and alternate ascendancies during the Legacy of Phrecia event. First, the names of the ascendancies are quite different. You can no longer see the Deadeye or Slayer, for example. Instead, you’ll have the Wildspeaker or the Aristocrat.

Second, the ascendancy nodes reflect these differences as well. For the Wildspeaker, the nodes available to her affect minions instead of projectile-based skills.

Ascendancy Class Balancing Changes for PoE Legacy of Phrecia Event 2026

GGG had more than enough time to assess the performance of each of the alternate ascendancies in PoE Legacy of Phrecia. As you can expect, there are some balancing changes that the company will implement, and let me tell you, there is going to be a new meta compared to last year!

You can find the most important changes below:

Daughter of Oshabi (Ranger)

• Bonuses to maximum life and resistances have been improved (Oath of the Maji). Most people who will play this class will most likely go for the increased maximum life only because having no gems in the helmet slot (to avail of the additional resistances) is too steep a price to pay.
• Roots of the Grove now make it easier for you to apply the maximum poison stacks on the enemy. Prioritize equipping the best PoE 2 items that provide you with increased attack speed to maximize this effect.
• Woodland Shrines and Innate Blessing have nudged this alternate ascendancy class into the “Shrine Gameplay.” As a result, it’s best that you use idols that make shrines appear more often in maps.

Whisperer

• The identity of the Whisperer has changed somewhat this time around. The “We Know All” ascendancy node now greatly increases the mana cost of your skills. To compensate for this, the bonus lightning damage to attacks has increased from 4% to 6%.
• The Whisperer is obviously for mana-stacking builds in Legacy of Phrecia 2026. If you’re going to play this ascendancy class, you might want to allocate “Breathe Deep” to make mana flask effects linger even when unreserved mana is filled.
• “Not a Word” no longer grants stealth. Instead, it makes you immune to Blind.

Wildspeaker

• The Wildspeaker remains largely the same, though with considerable buffs to “Feathered Scales” and “Flash of Teeth.”
• Greatwolf’s Call now provides a 50% increased effect of Tailwind on you (not your minions).
• Scourge of the Wilds now gives you a flat 100 increase to your Dexterity. This is awesome, considering that this ascendancy node makes your minions deal 1% increased damage for every 5 points of DEX that you have.

Antiquarian

• The Antiquarian has gained some noteworthy defensive buffs this time around. For instance, Exhibit 45: Turtle Shell now gives him life regeneration (in addition to increased stun and block recovery).
• Exhibit 126: Lioneye’s Shield now provides a 60% chance to block attacks and spells instead of the shield’s value. This makes the downsides of Svalinn even more bearable, making it a good shield to use for this ascendancy class.

Behemoth

• Spells are no longer disabled when “Rampager” is allocated. However, this ascendancy node does disable your auras and warcries, so you’re left with a purely melee and physical class.
• The use of Vaal Attack Skills is now more consistent with “Fueled by Hate” because the increased Rage Cost of skills has been removed.
• The Behemoth nudges you into trying unarmed builds, especially with the buff to Final Blow, where you now gain a 50% critical strike multiplier with unarmed melee attacks.

Ancestral Commander

• Ancestral Defiance and Ancestral Endurance have been nerfed.
• Call of the Ancestors got a huge nerf, particularly to warcry cooldown recovery rate. This reduces the effectiveness of the Ancestral Commander significantly.
• The leech effect from Spirit of Utula has been increased from 25% to 50%. However, this ascendancy node now only provides a 10% increased buff effect for every Kitava Tattoo on the passive tree (down from 20%).
• Ancestral Reach now strikes two additional nearby enemies (up from one).
• The Ancestral Commander, being one of the three most powerful alternate ascendancies in the previous Legacy of Phrecia event, has been nerfed considerably. If you’re going to choose this, you’ll have to experiment with strike skills for maximum impact.

Surfcaster

• Certain buffs provided by the “Ghost of the Deep” ascendancy node have been reduced to 23%, including increased attack speed, cast speed, and movement speed.
• Brine Bound makes you immune to being frozen, alleviating the need for similar modifiers on your other items.
• The Surfcaster’s changes make it somewhat good as a league starter, though not as great for an endgame build.

Servant of Arakaali

• Silk Dancer now makes enemies take slightly increased elemental damage, while dealing lower damage to you.
• You now gain a slightly higher extra chaos damage from the “Fatal Bite” ascendancy node while at maximum Power Charges.
• In addition to being able to inflict Penance Mark, “Weaver’s Contrition” now increases the effect of your mark skills by 50%. And yes, this affects Penance Mark, too, allowing you to spawn more phantasms when hitting the marked target.
• Overall, the Servant of Arakaali improved across the board. Choose this alternate ascendancy class if you’re thinking of playing chaos builds in PoE Legacy of Phrecia 2026.

Blind Prophet

• The base critical hit chance for attacks with weapons has been reduced from 12% to 9%. This effectively makes crit scaling a bit harder, forcing you to invest more PoE 2 currency in crit-based gear.

Harbinger

• The Harbinger is great for spell-based builds, especially after the buffs it received in the Legacy of Phrecia 2026 patch.
• For one, energy shield and mana recovery rates have been improved from 30% to 50%.
• Furthermore, debuffs on you expire exponentially faster, greatly increasing the Harbinger’s survivability.
• The Harbinger now enjoys a higher cooldown recovery rate, making builds that require the continuous use of skills more effective.
• Overall, the changes to the Harbinger are a net positive to this alternate ascendancy class.

Herald

• Among the alternate ascendancy classes in the Legacy of Phrecia event, the Herald has received quite a lot of buffs in the lineup.
• For one, Retribution now grants Elemental Conflux (guaranteed) after killing an enemy. This will make your subsequent elemental-based attacks or spells inflict Chill, Shock, and Ignite.
• The “Future” nodes increase the buff effect of Herald of Ash, Herald of Ice, Herald of Thunder, Herald of Agony, and Herald of Purity by 150% (up from 100%).
• Persecution now gives your herald skills a higher chance to critically strike.
• The Herald is definitely a top contender in the Legacy of Phrecia Event 2026. If you like playing PoE builds that are based on herald skills, then you should pick the Herald as your ascendancy class.

Bog Shaman

• The Bog Shaman is another ascendancy class worth using if you are into chaos-based builds.
• Fell Fen no longer reduces your chaos resistance to zero, allowing you to enjoy this ascendancy node without any downsides.
• Just be aware that “Vile Imprecations” no longer has increased reservation of aura skills. This forces you to tone down on auras linked to Blasphemy Support.

Aristocrat

• The Aristocrat is great for attribute-stacking builds and is quite similar to the Gemling Legionnaire ascendancy class in PoE 2.
• Dreadful Attitude provides a huge damage boost, though it now increases the attribute requirements of items and gems by 50% (instead of reducing them).
• If you’re going to allocate Dreadful Attitude, you should consider taking Family Heirlooms as well. This is to help address the increased attribute requirements from the former.

Gambler

• The Gambler’s defensive identity has been completely changed from pure evasion-based to being dependent on block chance. As a result, you may want to stack armor instead of evasion to compensate for this change.
• You now have a higher chance to deal triple damage with the “Growing Accumulator” ascendancy node. However, the “less damage” modifier has been increased slightly from 25% to 30%.
• The survivability of the Gambler has been greatly improved this time around, though it does not have any meaningful changes in its offensive capabilities.

Paladin

• The Consecrated Ground created by the “Anointed Champion” now has increased effectiveness.
• The change to Deep Connections, where link skill can target “damageable” minions, encourages you to try any of the link skills available to the game, such as Intuitive Link, Vampiric Link, and Destructive Link (among others).
• Energy shield seems to be the Paladin’s strongest defensive layer. Consider allocating Chaos Inoculation when getting the “Discipline” ascendancy node.

Architect of Chaos

• Glimpse Chaos provides increased survivability through life and energy shield bonuses, provided that you are willing to corrupt your pieces of gear.

Polytheist

• The Polytheist only received buffs to survivability in PoE Legacy of Phrecia 2026. The most notable is Devout of Ralakesh, which now provides Corrupted Blood immunity (in addition to +3 to Minimum Frenzy/Power/Endurance Charges).

Puppeteer

• Minion build enjoyers will definitely love what GGG has done to the Puppeteer.
• Flesh Puppets increase the level of your Raise Zombie gems by 5 (instead of 4). Besides that, it increases the size of zombies by 50%, making them noticeably larger than before.
• Graveyard Shift has been changed to increase the number of zombies you can raise by 30%.
• If you are going to play minion builds in Legacy of Phrecia, I highly recommend the Puppeteer.

Scavenger

• Most of the Scavenger’s nodes have been buffed, except for Void Battery and Cloak of Flame, which have their percentage values reduced by 10%.
• Midnight Bargain not only increases the number of skeletons you can raise, but also the number of Raging Spirits you can summon (by five).
• The Scavenger remains a “jack of all trades” ascendancy class, which means that it is mediocre in everything.
