Why Should You Train Smithing?

Smithing is a great skill to train to 99 for many reasons. First of all it's an AFK skill so you can sit back, relax and focus on any side activities while training. Secondly some methods and ways of training this skill are actually profitable so you will be making some side gp while training. Thirdly if you are an Ironman you can make one of the best armours in Runescape 3 through this skill. Also there are a lot of quests that require a certain smithing level to complete. Those quests are as follows:

  • Zogre Flesh Eaters - Smithing level 4

If you are looking to get a quest cape you will need at least level 85 Smithing. If you are looking to complete all the aerial tasks in the game to get those rewards, you will need to have at least level 95 Smithing.

RS3 Smithing Guide

Before we get into the actual ways of training this skill, there are a lot of buffs and items that you need to know about. If you already know about them or if you do not care, please skip to the title called "1-99 and Beyond Smithing Training".

Crystal Hammer

Crystal hammer is a degradable hammer that gives a +1% chance to double your progress when smithing any core metal. This hammer lasts for 3,000 strikes and can be crafted using a crystal tool seed and 150 harmonic dust at a singing bowl.

Augmented Crystal Hammer

After reaching level 22+ Invention you can start augmenting your tools and equipment, to gain perks. You can create a hammer-tron, then attach it to your crystal hammer by using an augmentor. After that you can add a tool gizmo on it to gain perks. Here are the two most useful perks for your hammer:

  • Tinker 4: 8% chance of making double progress.
  • Rapid 4: 20% chance of making double progress, but heat is lost twice as fast on every swing.
Powerburst of Masterstroke

Powerburst of masterstroke is a potion which multiplies your smithing progress by 10 for your next 4 hammer swings when you consume it. This potion does not apply to protean bars and has a 2 minute cooldown.

Perfect Juju Smithing Potion

Perfect juju smithing potion can be consumed to receive a 5% increased chance for double progress when smithing. Each dose of this potion lasts for 1 hour.

Superheat Form

Superheat form is a prayer that requires the completion of the quest "The Light Within" and level 91 Prayer. When active this prayer reduces the time it takes to smelt by 0.6 seconds. Wearing a grace of the elves necklace

Smithing Autoheater

Smithing auto heater is an item that can be filled with coal. When smithing it automatically increases your heat back to 30% when your heat drops to 0%, it uses 5 coal to do this.

Advanced Smithing Autoheater

This is a better version of the normal auto heater. Advanced version sets your heat back up to 60% when your heat drops to 0%. This also uses only 5 pieces of coal.

Luminite Injector

Using this item in the Artisans' Workshop provides an effect to everyone in the area. It adds an additional +1(base) progress to everyone's smithing product. This item can be purchased from the Artisans' Workshop Reward Shop for 100% respect each, or can be obtained from portable skilling packs. Each deploy lasts 5 minutes and this buff usually active on World 70.

Scroll of Efficiency

This is a Dungeoneering reward that grants a 2% chance per bar to refund that bar when Smithing.

Varrock Armour

Varrock armour is a reward from completing the Varrock achievements. Wearing this armour provides a chance for increased progression and it also provides a chance to receive extra bars when smelting ores. The higher tier the armour the more metals it affects. With Varrock armour 4 this goes up to elder rune bars.

Smelting Gauntlets

Smelting gauntlets is a reward from completing the quest "Family Crest". While equipped, these gauntlets directly send your smelted bars to your metal bank.

Morytania Legs 2&

Morytania legs 2 is a reward for completing the medium Morytania achievements. Thye double the speed at which you smith cannonballs in Port Phasmatys.

Brooch of the Gods

Wearing this item while smithing occasionally spawns Divine blessings which can be clicked on to get invention components. Additionally you can store your smelting urns in this item to save some inventory space. This item also provides a +20% experience boost for smithing ceremonial swords and repairing pipes at the Artisans' Workshop.

Smithing Cape

After reaching level 99 you can wear this cape. It provides you with a +5 base progress whenever an unfinished smiting item is reheated. This item works with both the superheat spell and auto heaters.

Superheat Item

Using this spell can be a more efficient way of smithing bars or re-heating items. Only downside being the cost of runes.

Smelting Urns

Urns are items that can be crafted to receive additional experience while Smithing. If you have empty urns while smithing, they will slowly fill up with experience. When full you can teleport them to gain some smithing experience. You can only have 10 full urns at a time so make sure to teleport them when they get full.

  • Cracked smelting urn - Crafting level 4 - 40 Experience gained from teleporting
  • Fragile smelting urn - Crafting level 17 - 62.5 Experience gained from teleporting
  • Plain smelting urn - Crafting level 35 - 150 Experience gained from teleporting
  • Strong smelting urn - Crafting level 49 - 250 Experience gained from teleporting
  • Decorated smelting urn - Crafting level 80 - 400 Experience gained from teleporting
Urn Enhancer

After level 24 Invention and completion of "Nomad's Elegy" you can discover and create an urn enhancer. When this item is in your inventory, it grants 25% additional experience for teleporting a full urn. This costs 20 charges out of your divine charges.

Blacksmith's Outfit

Blacksmith's outfit is an outfit that provides additional smithing experience per piece worn. You can purchase this outfit from the Artisans' Workshop for 50% respect per piece.

  • Blacksmith's helmet - 1% Experience boost
  • Blacksmith's top - 1% Experience boost
  • Blacksmith's apron - 1% Experience boost
  • Blacksmith's gloves - 1% Experience boost
  • Blacksmith's boots - 1% Experience boost
  • Set bonus - 1% Experience boost

Additionally, blacksmith's top provides the same effects as the highest tier of Varrock armour that you own and blacksmith's gloves provides the same effect as the smelting gauntlets if you own them.

Blacksmith's helmet can be upgraded by using a blacksmith's helmet add-on, on it. The upgraded version provides 3 daily teleports to the Artisans' workshop, 30-50 coal per day and a 5% chance for double bars when smelting.

Gofannon Amulet

This amulet is obtained during the quest "What's Mine is Yours". It gets filled with bonus experience when you complete Doric's Tasks quest series, Boric's Tasks quest series and the What's Mine is Yours quest itself.

Torstol Incense Stick

Consuming each one of these sticks will provide an additional increase to your base Mining experience. It is recommended to overload with these to get the maximum experience increase instantly, which is 2%.

Sacred/Volatile Clay Hammer

These hammers can be bought from the Stealing creation reward shop for 20 SC points. Sacred clay hammer provides 24,450 bonus Smithing experience and the Volatile clay hammer provides 29,340 bonus Smithing experience.

Smithing Brawling Gloves

This item is a rare drop from revenants, the chaos elemental or the wilderness shared loot table. These gloves provide an additional 50% Smithing experience when equipped. They are best used with rune ceremonial swords or dragonfire shields.

Inspire Genius

If you have level 118 Archaeology you can activate the relic power called "Inspire Genius" which provides a 2% experience increase to Smithing.

Orthen Furnace Core

This item requires level 102 Archaeology to obtain. It makes superheat form curse require no prayer. You can use this with the breakdown perk doing this boosts your smithing experience up to 5%.

Protean Bars

Protean bars are items that can be earned from Treasure Hunter. They can be used to train your Smithing in a very AFK manner. Their experience scales with your smithing level so you can use them any time you want although using these bars at higher levels is recommended.

1-99 and Beyond Smithing Training

Levels 1-29 The Knight's Sword: To start your Smithing journey you must first complete a very easy quest called "The Knight's Sword". This quest takes around 7 minutes and will get you straight to level 29 Smithing.

Levels 29-30 Steel Platebodies: To get the remainder of the experience to reach level 30 you need to have 18 steel bars. Use those bars to create a steel platebody +1.

Levels 30-40 Mithril Platebodies: From level 30 to 40 you will be making mithril platebodies and upgrading them to +2. You will need a total of 199 mithril bars to get to level 40.

Levels 40-50 Adamant Platebodies: From level 40 to 50 you will be making adamant platebodies and upgrading them to +2. You will need a total of 377 adamant bars to get to level 50.

Levels 50-60 Rune Platebodies: From level 50 to 60 you will be making rune platebodies and upgrading them to +3. Upgrading a platebody to +3 from +2 is more efficient and yields more experience while being more expensive. If you have the money to do so upgrade them to +3 if not leave them at +2. You will need a total of 719 rune bars to get to level 60.

Levels 60-70 Orikalkum Platebodies: From level 60 to 70 you will be making orikalkum platebodies and upgrading them to +3. Upgrading a platebody to +3 from +2 is more efficient and yields more experience while being more expensive. If you have the money to do so upgrade them to +3 if not leave them at +2. You will need a total of 1326 orikalkum bars to get to level 70.

Levels 70-80 Necronium Platebodies: From level 70 to 80 you will be making necronium platebodies and upgrading them to +4. Upgrading a platebody to +4 from +3 is more efficient and yields more experience while being more expensive. If you have the money to do so upgrade them to +4 if not leave them at +3. You will need a total of 2497 necronium bars to get to level 80.

Levels 80-90 Bane Platebodies: From level 80 to 90 you will be making bane platebodies and upgrading them to +4. Upgrading a platebody to +4 from +3 is more efficient and yields more experience while being more expensive. If you have the money to do so upgrade them to +4 if not leave them at +3. You will need a total of 4800 bane bars to get to level 90.

Levels 89-99 Corrupted Ore: Corrupted ore is an untradable ore that can be mined in Prifddinas. Getting to 99 requires 51,201 corrupted ores so this is a nice way to train your Mining and Smithing at the same time. You can also wait for the voice of Seren to get active in the smithing district to receive even more 192 experience instead of 160 from corrupted ores. 

Levels 90-99 Elder Rune Platebodies: From level 90 to 99 you will be making elder rune platebodies and upgrading them to +5. Upgrading a platebody to +5 from +4 is more efficient and yields more experience while being more expensive. If you have the money to do so upgrade them to +5 if not leave them at +4. You will need a total of 7688 elder rune bars to get to level 99.

Fastest Way to 99 Forging Burial Armour

Forging burial armour sets provides the best experience rates in the game. However this is an extremely costly method as you can't sell your products.

  • This method is twice as fast.
  • Only the highest tier of the item is available for use on a burial forge and anvil.
  • The item is destroyed in the process.
  • Experience rates can exceed 1M experience per hour.
  • Smithing a full set grants 5% more experience than smithing each part of the set individually.

Levels 40-50 Adamant Burial Sets: From level 40 to 50 you will be making adamant burial sets. You only need to create 15 sets to get to level 50, which will cost you around 3.2M gold.

EXP/H: 85K

Levels 50-60 Rune Burial Sets: From level 50 to 60 you will be creating rune burial sets. You only need to create 15 of them to get to level 60, which will cost you around 7.7M gold.

Levels 60-70 Orikalkum Burial Sets: From level 60 to 70 you will be creating orikalkum burial sets. You need to make 27 of them to reach level 70, which will cost you around 15.6M gold.

EXP/H: 210K

Levels 70-80 Necronium Burial Sets: From level 70 to 80 you will be making necronium burial sets. You need to make 25 of them to get to level 80, which will cost you around 51.5M gold.

EXP/H: 450K

Levels 80-90 Bane Burial Sets: From level 80 to 90 you will be creating bane burial sets. You need to make 48 of them to reach level 90, which will cost you around 105.3M gold.

EXP/H: 560K

Levels 90-99 Elder Rune Burial Sets: From level 90 to 99 you will be making elder rune burial sets. You need to make 39 of them to reach level 99, which will cost you around 284M gold.

EXP/H: 1.2M

Profitable Way to Train Your Smithing

Smelting bars is the most profitable and slow way to train your Smithing. If you are not in a rush and want to AFK while you train and make money at the same time, this is the way for you. Also you can do the early levels via other methods and switch to smelting bars at higher levels to have increased gp rates. Having Smelting Gauntlets is a must for this method.

Levels 1-10 Bronze Bars: From level 1 to 10 you will be smelting bronze bars. You need to make 1,154 bronze bars to reach level 10, which takes around 35 minutes.

EXP/H: 2K GP/H: 928K

Levels 10-20 Iron Bars: For levels 10 to 20 you will be smelting iron bars. You need to smelt 1,658 iron bars to reach level 20. This will take around 50 minutes. This is also one of the two bars that will actually make you lose money. 

EXP/H: 4K GP/H: -519K

Levels 20-30 Steel Bars: For levels 20 to 30 you will be smelting steel bars. You need to smelt 2,964 bars to reach level 30 and this will take around 1 hour. This is the other bar that will make you lose money instead of a profit.

EXP/H: 6K GP/H: -1.3M

Levels 30-40 Mithril Bars: For levels 30 to 40 you will be smelting mithril bars. You need to smelt 4,772 bars to reach level 40. This will take around 2.4 hours.

EXP/H: 10K GP/H: 1.9M

Levels 40-50 Adamant Bars: For levels 40 to 50 you will be smelting adamant bars. You need to smelt 9,158 bars to reach level 50. This will take around 5 hours.

EXP/H: 13.7K GP/H: 1.7M

Levels 50-60 Rune Bars: For levels 50 to 60 you will be smelting rune bars. You need to smelt 17,241 bars to reach level 60. This will take around 9 hours.

EXP/H: 20K GP/H: 1.8M

Levels 60-70 Orikalkum Bars: For levels 60 to 70 you will be smelting orikalkum bars. You need to smelt 35,683 bars to reach level 70. This will take around 18 hours.

EXP/H: 25.4K GP/H: 2.1M

Levels 70-80 Necronium Bars: For levels 70 to 80 you will be smelting necronium bars. You need to smelt 73,438 bars to reach level 80. This will take around 37 hours.

EXP/H: 34K GP/H: 2.5M

Levels 80-90 Bane Bars: For levels 80 to 90 you will be smelting bane bars. You need to smelt 160,013 bars to reach level 90. This will take around 80 hours.

EXP/H: 42K GP/H: 2.8M

Levels 90-99 Elder Rune Bars: For levels 90 to 99 you will be smelting elder rune bars. You need to smelt 295,696 bars to reach level 99. This will take around 148 hours.

EXP/H: 78K GP/H: 6.7M
