Impale/Fend Spear Amazon Guide
The Spear Amazon is making a comeback in D2R as Blizzard announced that they are going to buff the Fend and the Impale skill. The Spear Amazon is mainly a player vs monster build, as it wields two-handed weapons and deals melee damage. Using Fend against monsters is very much like the paladin’s Zeal skill, it will hit several targets with each melee attack. Impale on the other hand is a much slower attack that deals immense damage against one target.
Use Fend against monster groups, and Impale against single targets. There are very few physical immune monsters in the game, so you will be able to clear almost any area. As the attacking skills don’t have any synergies, you will be able to put a lot of points on passive and magic skills and have great survivability.
You can make your build more offensive by putting points on Critical Strike and Penetrate, or more defensive by putting points on Dodge, Avoid and Evade. The character relies on running for movement, so having 7% faster run and walk on your +javelin and magic skill grand charms, or % faster run and walk on your gear can make you clear areas and get to Bosses much faster.
For Mercenary you should either use a nightmare act2 offensive one for it’s might aura, or an act1 one if you can afford a Faith bow for her to provide you with Fanaticism Aura, or if you want to equip her with a Harmony runeword and enjoy much faster running speed provided by the Vigor aura. An act2 merc can further boost your damage by wearing a Pride runeword, providing you with Concentration aura as well.
For Hardcore, 75% all resistance on Hell is a must-have, and having a Call to Arms as a switch weapon to cast Battle Orders can almost double your life and mana. In Addition, you should aim for up to 50% physical damage reduction. Having a Valkyrie casted at all times also helps with survivability as enemy monsters will attack her instead of you.
The build is not the best fit for MFing as the gearing options are limited for Magic Find, but it can still have a decent MF by having your inventory full of 7% magic find small charms. By having a merc with harmony, you can quickly get to bosses even at the start of a ladder season, the build is ideal for Mephisto, Andariel or Nihlatlak runs.
Strength: Put just enough points on it to be able to wear your items.
Dexterity: Put just enough points on it to be able to wear your items
Vitality: Put all your available points on it.
Energy: Don’t put any points on it
20 points on Impale + 1 point on prerequisite skills
20 points on Fend
1 point on each Passive and Magic skill except for Pierce
20 points on Critical Strike
20 points on Penetrate
Remaining points on Evade
Optionally you can put points on Dodge and Avoid instead of Critical Strike and Penetrate
The listed items are organized by slots.
The usefulness rating of an item is based on how good it is for farming.
The price rating reflects the cost of the item (cheaper ones are available after ladder starts as budget options), higher price ratings reflect exponentially higher cost for an item.
Adding sockets and improving your items
If you complete the act5 quest Siege on Harrogath, Larzuk will grant extra socket/sockets to your items. Use the quest to add sockets to your gear and put useful jewels, runes or gems in your item sockets.
You can also upgrade your unique items from normal to exceptional quality and from exceptional to elite by using Horadric Cube recipes. After upgrading, your armor pieces will have more defense, and your weapon pieces will have more damage. The downside of upgrading is the increased strength/dexterity requirements.

Have a Nightmare Act2 Offensive Mercenary to provide you with Might aura to boost your damage.
Ethereal items don’t lose durability if your mercenary wears them, so having ethereal item bases for each gear slot is preferred due to their increased defense on armor items and increased damage on weapons. In many instances ethereal items that are great for mercenaries will be much more expensive than non-ethereal ones.
