WOW WotLK Mage Guide: Talents, Abilities & Leveling

Mages are masters of the schools of frost, fire, and arcane spells. Use the School of Frost to chill enemies until they can't move, use the School of Fire to grill anyone who opposes you, and use the Arcane to blow up anyone in your way. All three schools of magic provide different utilities for the mage's kit, allowing them to knock down enemies or kite them from one end of the map to the other.

RPGStash will take you to understand the advantages and disadvantages of mages, Talent paths and training capabilities, Gearing, Professions, and Class Quests & Rewards, so that you can have a comprehensive understanding of mages, and know more about the goals of leveling up, earning WotLK Gold, and what is suitable for you Classes or Professions.

Mage's Fighting Power

Arcane magic predominates in short-range combat, fire-type fire excels in longer conflicts, and frost predominates in battles moving at glacial speeds. Get the most out of the right range. Mage leveling is one of the best places to showcase your potential as a mage, especially in the AoE area, allowing you to do two different styles of leveling. Let's meet WotLK Classic Mage together.

Pros and Cons of Mage

Pros

Doesn’t require gear while leveling.

Reliable and consistent leveling experience.

Great damage over an extended period.

One of the best movement abilities in BlinkBlink

Very quick leveling speed (after level 20).

Free Food and Water to reduce downtime!

Can travel between cities starting at level 40

Cons

Rotation can feel repetitive

Constantly asked for food and water (can be a pro as well!)

Very squishy class

General Leveling Tips & Gameplay Advice

Getting to level 80 is usually quite a challenge, but mages have several tricks up their sleeve to race to the top. With our ability to kill up to 10 mobs at once we have a massive advantage over many other casters and even some melee; Mages also have a couple of ways to escape from sticky situations!

Leveling Tips

You’ll probably do this naturally, but try to kill enemies anywhere and everywhere you go. If you have full health and mana try pushing your class a bit further and only stop when you’re fully out of mana with no methods to regenerate it except through water.

Make sure to visit the class Trainer regularly to improve your spells to then make leveling easier.

Unlike other classes, you will almost always want to fight 3 or more mobs (past level 20) at once in order to speed up your leveling experience.

Try to fight enemies that are the same level as you as they grant the most XP.

Remember to use your HearthstoneHearthstone to get around quickly, if you’re under level 10 you can also use the graveyards as well to save time running back and forth.

While grouping will definitely increase how fast you level and is recommended for solo target leveling, AoE grinding is faster without being in a group with others.

Rotation

The rotation for Mage is as follows; note that it depends both on what level you are as well as your leveling strategy:

Levels 1-10: 3 Frostbolt > Wand till dead or 3 Fireball > Wand till dead

Levels 11- 24: At this point you can start using Arcane Explosion to kill groups of mobs (3-4 at most)

Levels 25-60: At this point you can start massively aoe grinding mobs while questing while using Ice Barrier > Wand/Fire Blast> Counterspell(to pull mobs) > Frost Nova > Blizzard > Arcane Explosion whatever is left! For single target, stick to Frostbolt or Fireball spam to kill mobs quickly.

Level 61-80: By this point any of the specs main spells will be great for leveling, and each rotation can be used during this time!

Each spec has a different way of leveling after level 60:

Arcane uses a combo of Arcane Blast to 4 stacks into an Arcane Missiles.

Frost mages will want to spam Frostbolt and Blizzard for AoE grinding.

Fire can spam Living Bomb onto 10 targets into a Dragon's Breath into a Blast Wave.

Talent Path & Training Abilities

Talent

Depending on the school you want to specialize in, your talent path will vary greatly:

The Frost upgrade revolves around using Blizzard for AoE, Summoning Water Elemental and Frostbolt to kill mobs. It is usually the best spec to choose to upgrade as it has the highest survivability of the 3 specs.

Leveling as Fire revolves around Living Bomb for AoE, Fireball and Pyroblast for a Single target, while also getting Pyroblast with Hot Streak. Fire, while weak early on, has no survivability with frost or AOE potential, but will catch up once you get Living Bombs and will be able to place it on 10 monsters at once and blow them up.

Upgrade to Arcane (Level 64) around Arcane Blast and Arcane Missile. This spec has the highest burst potential of the three specs and can be used to kill single-player mobs the fastest.

Abilities to Train

Since the abilities of the mages are very rich, most of them are worth learning, and few are not needed (Amplify Magic and Dampen Magic). So when you visit a trainer, you should train all possible spells.

Professions

Your level-up goals determine the career you choose. The player's goal might be the endgame, possibly earning WotLK Gold. No matter what your goals are, you should upgrade First Aid to Mage, but your other options are up to you:

Speed Leveling: Get First Aid only. All other classes will cut your time, and even something as simple as skinning will take hours to reach level 80.

Quick Leveling + Gold Coin Generation: Skinning can be done here. It will add some time, but will also result in a good flow of gold coins.

Up to two classes: If you want up to two classes at the same time, skinning paired with herbalism or mining is a good start.

Endgame: Start with engineering and mining, then give up mining to get a tailor. It may take a while for these classes to max out and get the items you need from them, but doing so ends up giving you the two best mage classes.

Gearing

Knowing what stats to prioritize, and what sort of gear you should be looking for, can go a long way toward making your time leveling easier.

Equipment

Try to use a one-hander and an off-hand item for a better combination of stats. While Staves can look cooler, the one-hander and off-hand combo tend to do better overall in terms of the combination of stats it can give you.

Mages can do well without major upgrades (you can get to level 80 in Westfall blues and greens) but anything with Spell power, Intellect, Spirit, and Stamina on it will help a lot when it comes to killing mobs faster!

Always have a decent wand with you, as you may need a couple of wand hits to finish off an enemy at lower levels.

Stat Priority

The following list is a general guideline for what stats you should prioritize getting from gear, gems, and enchants (and even potions!).

Spell Power – This stat can increase your damage by nearly double for some spells, and affects everything besides wands and weapons.

Intellect – Increases our mana pool, our mana regen, and gives us passive crit. This is a very nice stat to have, as mages can quickly run out of mana while leveling.

Spirit – Helps with Mana regen as well as converting into Crit with Molten Armor on.

Stamina – Helps us survive longer and allows us to pull more mobs before dying, need I say more on this amazing stat?

Class Quests & Rewards

When completing Class Quests, it's important to choose the best reward!

Mirror Lake: This class quest has only 2 rewards, Ley Orb is a better choice as it is a smaller version of our Conjure Mana Gem.

Celestial Power: With this quest, we have 2 other rewards. The Celestial Orb is the better option as it enables more stats with one hand and is a small Conjure Mana Gem.

Destroy Morphaz: With this quest, we can get 3 possible rewards; all three can be useful, but Arcane Crystal Pendant is better for everyone except fire mages who will want to choose fire ruby.
