D2R Season 14 is now live, and with it comes the balancing changes from Patch 3.2. Although there were no changes to runewords in this update, Patch 3.2 brought balancing adjustments to certain Warlock skills, including Ring of Fire, Flame Wave, Bind Demon, Blood Boil, and Echoing Strike, among others.

The good news is that the runewords that the Warlock uses are untouched. It’s only about choosing the right one to get the most out of your build. Find out which runewords are viable for the Warlock class now in D2R Season 14 below.

D2R Season 14 Warlock runewords

How Patch 3.2 Has Impacted the Choice of Warlock Runewords

Echoing Strike was one of the most popular skills when Diablo II: Resurrected—Reign of the Warlock dropped. It is an Eldritch Skill that prompts you to send several copies of your weapon as projectiles toward the enemy.

When it was first released, it dealt huge amounts of damage. This is compounded by the fact that you could wield a two-handed weapon in your main hand and a shield in your off-hand, which enabled the use of Spirit or Phoenix to improve your cast speed or damage with Echoing Strike, respectively.

Apparently, that huge damage output was not a result of the skill itself, but a bug. This issue caused damage bonuses for Echoing Strike that came from various D2R Items to be calculated multiplicatively instead of additively. This has now been addressed in Patch 3.2.

Unsurprisingly, the community was not happy with this because it made Echoing Strike perform poorly as a result. To compensate for this change, Blizzard has increased the base damage scaling of your equipped weapon from 75% to 90%.

As if that is not enough, Blizzard also made another bug fix that it has tested on the PTR. Specifically, this was meant to address the issue where Echoing Strike would not reduce the durability of your equipped weapon over time.

After much contemplation among the developers, the company has reverted this bug fix in Patch 3.2. This means that you can now safely use an ethereal weapon as a base for your choice of D2R runeword in Season 14.

Aside from Echoing Strike, there are other skills that received some changes in Patch 3.2. Here’s a rundown:

  • Blood Boil’s skill description now clearly states what its radius is based on its current level. At max level, it will state that it covers 7 yards.
  • Summon Tainted: The issue where Summon Tainted did not receive the damage synergy bonus from Blood Boil has been fixed. To balance this out, the fire damage increase per level is reduced from 30% to 20%.
  • Ring of Fire: Base maximum damage scaling has been reduced (from 12-181 to 10-175).
  • Flame Wave: Reduced base damage scaling by around 15% (from 14-19 at level 1 (17-23 previously) to 267-303 at level 20 (down from 310-355)).
  • Miasma Chain: Casting delay has been removed. However, the active chains that it can produce now have a limit of five, which maxes out at 10 chains. Plus, a “next hit delay (NHD) has been added for each individual chain (applies only to the clouds generated by a single chain).
  • Abyss: Now has a maximum radius that’s capped at 11 yards.
  • Bind Demon:
    • Now requires base skill point investment to bind elite demons—10 for Champions, 15 for unique monsters, 20 for superunique monsters.
    • Introduced a max health cap, depending on the bound demon.
    • The overall chance to bind a demon-type monster has been reduced. Base chance now starts at 20% and increases up to 56% at the max level.
    • Reduced the “Cursed” affix’s chance to cast Amplify damage from 75% to 5%.

Among the changes mentioned, only Echoing Strike and Bind Demon are impacted significantly in Patch 3.2. The rest of the skills that got nerfed in this update can be rectified by using the right items, including some D2R runewords. Check out our Blood Boil Warlock and Apocalypse Warlock build guides for D2R Season 14 to find out how the changes have impacted these builds.

Warlock Runewords for D2R Season 14

What are the runewords in Diablo II: Resurrected that Warlocks use after the changes made in Patch 3.2? You will find a comprehensive list below, separated by their respective gear slots.

Best D2R Warlock Weapon Runewords

Grief

  • 35% Chance to Cast level 15 Venom on Striking
  • +30-40% Increased Attack Speed
  • Damage +340-400
  • Ignores Target Defense
  • -25% Target Defense
  • +1.875-185.625% damage to demons (based on character level)
  • Adds 5-30 Fire Damage
  • -20-25% to Enemy Poison Resistance
  • 20% Deadly Strike
  • Prevent Monster Heal
  • +2 to Mana After Each Kill
  • +10-15 Life After Each Kill

Despite the sizable nerfs made to Echoing Strike in D2R Season 14, the skill itself is still viable if you use the right items. First up is Grief, specifically with the Eth, Tir, Lo, Mal, and Ral runes socketed into a Phase Blade to allow you to wield a shield runeword to complement it.

The reason why Grief is still viable for Warlocks in Patch 3.2 is that it provides a huge flat damage increase of up to 400. When you pair it with Phoenix or Fortitude, that flat damage of a Grief Phase Blade is massively improved due to the % Enhanced Damage from the aforementioned runewords.

The only issue here is that your stats will be spread thin, considering that a Phase Blade requires 136 DEX to wield, and the Monarch Shield (which is the base for Spirit or Phoenix) needs 156 STR. If you’re fine with these compromises, then the Grief Phase Blade is a good weapon runeword for the Echoing Strike Warlock.

Fortitude

  • 20% Chance to Cast Level 15 Chilling Armor when Struck
  • 25% Faster Cast Rate
  • 300% Enhanced Damage
  • +9 to Minimum Damage
  • +50 to Attack Rating
  • 20% Deadly Strike
  • Hit Causes Monster to Flee 25%
  • +200% Enhanced Defense
  • +X to Life (based on character level)
  • All Resistances +25-30
  • 12% Damage Taken Goes to Mana
  • +1 to Light Radius

Another solid weapon runeword for the Echoing Strike Warlock in D2R Season 14, Fortitude provides a huge 300% Enhanced Damage that gets better when you choose the right weapon base. For this reason, a Thunder Maul is the preferred base because of its insane high base damage.

Due to the reverted bug fix in Patch 3.2, you can now safely use an Ethereal Thunder Maul, as Echoing Strike no longer reduces the durability of the weapon with each use. Insert the El, Sol, Dol, and Lo runes in that order.

Obsession

  • 24% Chance to cast level 10 Weaken When Struck
  • +4 to All Skills
  • +65% Faster Cast Rate (FCR)
  • +60% Faster Hit Recovery (FHR)
  • +10 to Vitality
  • +10 to Energy
  • Increase Maximum Life by 15-25%
  • All Resistances +60-70
  • 75% Extra Gold from Monsters
  • 30% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
  • Knocks back enemies
  • Indestructible

Obsession is used by many Warlock builds in D2R season 14 due to its suite of affixes that benefit the said class. This weapon runeword has the bonuses that spellcasters need, such as +4 to all skills, 65% FCR, and 65% FHR, among others.

The only hurdle in creating the Obsession Runeword is that it requires a Zod Rune, which is considered the rarest rune in Diablo II: Resurrected. If you want to learn the best farming spots and some useful tips for farming the Zod Rune, you can read our D2R Rune Farming Guide.

Take note that you can only wield Grimoire-type items in the off-hand, as stated in Patch 3.2. Hence, if you are going to use Obsession (which requires a two-handed staff), go for a rare Grimoire with “+ to Warlock Skills” or one of the unique Grimoires in Diablo II: Resurrected, depending on your build.

Insight

  • Level 12-17 Meditation Aura When Equipped
  • +35% Faster Cast Rate
  • +200-260% Enhanced Damage
  • +9 to Minimum Damage
  • 180-250% Bonus to Attack Rating
  • Adds 5-30 Fire Damage
  • +75 Poison Damage Over 5 Seconds
  • +1-6 to Critical Strike
  • +5 to All Attributes
  • +2 to Mana After each Kill
  • 23% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

A common weapon used by many Act 2 Mercenaries in Diablo II: Resurrected, the Insight Runeword is actually viable for the Warlock as well. Insight has that all-important Meditation Aura, which greatly increases your mana recovery rate when equipped.

On top of that, Insight has 35% FCR and up to 260% Enhanced Damage—two things that benefit the Echoing Strike Warlock and even those who use Mirrored Blades.

Since the base damage of a weapon is crucial to the success of Echoing Strike Warlock builds, you must use a suitable base. For Insight, RPGStash recommends the Cryptic Axe for its relatively low STR and DEX requirements to wield. Insert the Ral, Tir, Tal, and Sol to create the Insight Runeword.

Void

  • +2 to All Skills
  • 40% Faster Cast Rate
  • +10-15% to Magic Skill Damage
  • +1-3 to Abyss
  • +8-12 to All Attributes
  • Level 4 Decrepify (35 Charges)
  • Adds 3-14 Cold Damage
  • 30% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
  • Indestructible

Void is a D2R weapon runeword that you should aim for in the endgame. The reason for this is that it benefits the Echoing Strike Warlock build, precisely because it increases skill levels by two and provides that hefty 40% FCR.

There is also an added benefit to using Void as opposed to a two-handed weapon runeword like Fortitude or Obsession because you can wield a shield runeword to complement it. You can go with Spirit for a more budget option with +2 to skills and some FCR, or Phoenix for that huge boost in Enhanced Damage.

When getting a dagger for Void, obtain an elite dagger base (like Legend Spike) so that it can roll “+ to Hex: Purge.” Hex: Purge is now part of the Echoing Strike Warlock, as the said skill provides a chance for enemies to explode on hit.

Now, Void needs Thul, Zod, and Ist runes together, and you already know that Zod is quite a rare find in Diablo II: Resurrected. If you want to get your hands on this weapon runeword, you can buy all the runes necessary to create the Void Runeword from the RPGStash D2R Store.

Call to Arms

  • +1 to All Skills
  • +40% Increased Attack Speed
  • +250-290% Enhanced Damage
  • Adds 5-30 Fire Damage
  • 7% Life Stolen per Hit
  • +2-6 to Battle Command
  • +1-6 to Battle Orders
  • +1-4 to Battle Cry
  • Prevent Monster Heal
  • Replenish Life + 12
  • 30% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

On the surface, you might see Call to Arms as a legitimate weapon runeword that you can use in the mid-game of Diablo II: Resurrected. However, it is outclassed by the other runewords mentioned in this guide.

The reason why Call to Arms is mentioned here, however, is that it’s used primarily to buff your Warlock with Battle Command and Battle Orders. Don’t forget to equip a Spirit (Monarch) in your off-hand when casting the said skills.

Leaf

  • Adds 5-30 Fire Damage
  • +3 to Fire Skills
  • +3 to Fire Bolt (Sorceress Only)
  • +3 to Inferno (Sorceress Only)
  • +3 to Warmth (Sorceress Only)
  • +2 to Mana After Each Kill
  • +2-198 to Defense (based on character level)
  • Cold Resistance +33%

Leaf is a good D2R runeword for leveling, especially if you’re playing the Fire Warlock build. Its “+3 to Fire Skills” can benefit Warlocks, though the bonuses to Fire Bolt, Inferno, and Warmth are only active when you play the Sorceress class.

If you want to create the Leaf Runeword to help with your leveling journey, get a staff from Drognan in Act 2 and insert the Tir and Ral runes into it. Both these runes can be obtained from The Countess in Act 1.

Best D2R Warlock Off-Hand Runewords

Spirit

  • +2 to All Skills
  • +25-35% Faster Cast Rate
  • +55% Faster Hit Recovery
  • +250 Defense vs. Missile (attacks)
  • +22 to Vitality
  • +89-112 to Mana
  • Cold Resistance +35%
  • Lightning Resistance +35%
  • Poison Resistance +35%
  • +3-8 Magic Absorb
  • Attacker Takes Damage of 14

Spirit is beneficial to all classes in Diablo II: Resurrected, and this includes the Warlock class as well. It’s got a good set of affixes, specifically +2 to all skills, +55% FHR, and up to 35% FCR. It also grants huge increases to poison, lightning, and cold resistance, which are useful when playing D2R Season 14 in Hell Difficulty.

Having said that, the runes for Spirit (Tal, Thul, Ort, and Amn) can actually be inserted into a sword. However, they are often inserted into the Monarch Shield instead, and used as a viable mid- to late-game off-hand item.

If you’re not using a one-handed weapon, the Spirit (Monarch) can be equipped in your weapon swap as a complement to Call to Arms.

Phoenix

  • 100% Chance to Cast Level 40 Blaze When You Level Up
  • 40% Chance to Cast Level 22 Firestorm on Striking
  • Level 10-15 Redemption Aura When Equipped
  • +350-400 Defense vs. Missile (attacks)
  • +350-400% Enhanced Damage
  • -28% to Enemy Fire Resistance
  • +50 to Life
  • +10% to Maximum Fire Resistance
  • +15-21 Fire Absorb

The Phoenix Runeword is ideal in the hands of the Apocalypse Warlock or the Echoing Strike Warlock. It’s great for the former because of that huge 400% Enhanced Damage affix. It is also amazing for the latter due to that “-28% to enemy fire resistance.”

Take note that Phoenix requires a Monarch Shield at the very least because it needs two Vex Runes, a Lo Rune, and a Jah Rune to make. When wielding it with the Grief Runeword, you can only use a one-handed weapon as a base if you wish to pair it with Phoenix.

Splendor

  • +1 to All Skills
  • +10% Faster Cast Rate
  • +20% Faster Block Rate
  • +60-100% Enhanced Defense
  • +10 to Energy
  • Regenerate Mana 15%
  • 50% Extra Gold from Monsters
  • 20% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
  • +3 to Light Radius

Available starting level 37, Splendor is a good off-hand runeword for Warlocks because of its +1 to skills, 10% FCR, and +10 to Energy. Since most Warlock builds are hungry for mana early on, Splendor’s “Regenerate Mana 15%” works wonders for leveling.

Although Splendor is a shield runeword in Diablo II: Resurrected, it can actually be inserted into a two-socketed Grimoire as well. For this reason, you want a Grimoire that adds levels to your main skills before you insert the Eth and Lum runes.

Best D2R Warlock Helmet Runewords

Flickering Flame

  • Level 4-8 Resist Fire Aura When Equipped
  • +3 to Fire Skills
  • -10-15% to Enemy Fire Resistance
  • +30% Enhanced Defense
  • +30 Defense vs. Missile (attacks)
  • +50-75 to Mana
  • Half Freeze Duration
  • +5% to Maximum Fire Resistance
  • Poison Length Reduced by 50%

Flickering Flame has a special combination of affixes that works wonders for the Apocalypse Warlock. For one, it’s got that powerful affix that reduces the fire resistance of nearby enemies by up to 15%. Besides that, Flickering Flame raises the level of fire skills by 3, which works for the Warlock, given that it does not have a class restriction.

When choosing the helmet for Flickering Flame, get one that increases the level of either Warlock or Chaos Skills. These can be found in a Tiara, Coronet, or Diadem. After acquiring the right base, insert the Nef, Pul, and Vex runes in that specific order to create the Flickering Flame runeword in D2R Season 14.

Coven

  • 5% Chance to Cast Level 10 Sigil: Lethargy
  • +1 to All Skills
  • +20% Faster Cast Rate
  • +1-5 Life After Each Kill
  • 26-40% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
  • Fire Resistance +30%
  • +10 to Vitality

Coven is one of the newest runewords introduced in Diablo II: Resurrected—Reign of the Warlock DLC. This helmet runeword is best known for having +1 to skills and 20% FCR, which are affixes that are useful for any budding Warlock in D2R Season 14.

If you are playing the Fire Warlock build and you want to use the Coven as your helmet, find a suitable base that has “+ to Chaos/Warlock Skills.” Besides that, secure the Ist, Ral, and Io runes and put them inside that helmet in this exact order.

In addition, Coven is a good helmet to soften the fire resistance penalty of the Latent Flame Rift (if you happen to have this sunder charm in your inventory).

Lore

  • +1 to All Skills
  • +10 to Energy
  • +2 to Mana After Each Kill
  • Lightning Resistance +30%
  • Damage reduced by 7
  • +2 to Light Radius

Lore has been a staple for early-game leveling in Diablo II: Resurrected, and that still holds true in Season 14. Available at level 27, Lore is great for mana-intensive Warlocks because of the mana you can get back from killing monsters.

You only need a two-socketed helmet for this runeword. Acquire an Ort Rune and a Sol Rune from The Countess in Act 1 Nightmare Difficulty to create Lore.

Best D2R Warlock Armor Runewords

Fortitude

  • 20% Chance to Cast Level 15 Chilling Armor When Struck
  • 25% Faster Cast Rate
  • +300% Enhanced Damage
  • +200% Enhanced Defense
  • +15 Defense
  • +X to Life (based on character level)
  • Replenish Life +7
  • +5% to Maximum Lightning Resistance
  • All Resistances +25-30
  • Damage Reduced by 7
  • 12% Damage Taken Goes to Mana
  • +1 to Light Radius

If you are wielding the Grief Runeword as your main-hand weapon, you have to complement that with items that provide “% Enhanced Damage.” That is where Fortitude comes in.

When the El, Sol, Dol, and Lo runes are inserted into a 4-socketed body armor, you create the Fortitude Runeword that grants 300% Enhanced Damage. Additionally, Fortitude provides a huge increase in defense, so you must ensure that you choose the Archon Plate as its base.

Enigma

  • +2 to All Skills
  • +45% Faster Run/Walk
  • +1 to Teleport
  • +750-775 Defense
  • +0-74 to Strength (based on character level)
  • Increased Maximum Life by 5%
  • Damage Reduced by 8%
  • +14 Life After Each Kill
  • 15% Damage Taken Goes to Mana
  • +1-99% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items (based on character level)

Enigma is still the best endgame mobility armor runeword for most Warlock builds in D2R season 14. This runeword is popular in Diablo II: Resurrected for a reason—it gives you the ability to cast Teleport, which used to be a Sorceress-only skill.

Teleport can quickly get you to your preferred farming spot, which is why it is highly sought after. That power comes at a cost, however, as Enigma requires the Jah, Ith, and Ber runes put together. If you’re playing any Warlock build in D2R Season 14, use the Mage Plate as a base for its good defenses and relatively low STR requirement.

Authority

  • 2% Chance to Cast Level 10 Psychic Ward When Struck
  • 10% Chance to Cast Level 15 Miasma Chain on Striking
  • +2 to Warlock Skill Levels
  • +40-60% Enhanced Damage
  • Requirements -15%
  • +20% Faster Hit Recovery
  • Fire Resistance +30%

Authority is a new runeword in Diablo II: Resurrected that provides +2 to Warlock Skills, 20% FHR, and a considerable amount of fire resistance. You can use it in the mid-game until you can get your hands on Fortitude or Enigma.

You need a 3-socketed body armor for this one to accommodate the Hel, Shael, and Ral runes. If you get a Mage Plate sometime during the course of your leveling journey, then use that as the base for Authority.

Stealth

  • Magic Damage Reduced by 3
  • +6 to Dexterity
  • +15 to Maximum Stamina
  • Poison Resistance +30%
  • Regenerate Mana 15%
  • 25% Faster Run/Walk Speed
  • 25% Faster Cast Rate
  • 25% Faster Hit Recovery

Another awesome body armor runeword for Warlocks in D2R Season 14, Stealth has all you need to get you through Nightmare Difficulty. It’s got 25% FCR, FHR, and run/walk speed, which are nice bonuses to have while leveling.

Stealth is already good enough that you can skip the Authority Runeword and go straight for either Fortitude or Enigma, depending on your Warlock build. The only reason for using Authority is for its “+2 to Warlock Skill Levels.” If you don’t need it or you have no access to its required runes, then Stealth is fine for Normal and Nightmare Difficulty.

Get a 2-socketed body armor and put the Tal and Eth runes into it to form Stealth.

FAQ

Which Warlock Runewords Should I Aim For?

Any Warlock build in D2R Season 14 can benefit from Enigma because it gives you access to the Teleport skill.

For builds centered around Echoing Strike and Mirrored Blades, you can use Grief, Fortitude, and Phoenix. Just keep in mind that you cannot equip a shield runeword if you’re already using a two-handed weapon, as this is a change that was made in Patch 3.2.

For fire-based Warlock builds, Flickering Flame on the Helmet and Enigma as the body armor will go a long way.

Void is also worth mentioning due to its suite of affixes, including +2 to All Skills, 40% FCR, and up to +3 to Abyss (which is an oSkill that can be used by all classes in Diablo II: Resurrected).

Is the Void Runeword Worth It for the Price?

The Void Runeword is going to be popular in D2R Season 14 because of the limitation that you can only equip Grimoire-type off-hands after Patch 3.2 when equipping a two-handed weapon.

Void uses a suitable dagger as a base, and as mentioned previously, has a combination of affixes that can benefit most Warlock builds. Because daggers are one-handed weapons, you can actually use Spirit or Phoenix in the off-hand if you want.

What Are the Best Leveling Runewords for Warlocks?

Leaf for the weapon, Splendor for the off-hand, Lore for the Helmet, and Authority for the body armor.
