The Blood Boil Warlock is a build that takes center stage after the nerfs Blizzard has made to Echoing Strike. It uses a skill that deals both physical and fire damage, and has some nice synergies with the right D2R Items.

D2R Season 14 Blood Boil Warlock: Patch 3.2 Context
Echoing Strike was one of the most popular skills in Diablo II: Resurrected—Reign of the Warlock. It dealt huge amounts of damage that no other Warlock skill comes close to Echoing Strike, especially when you are decked out with the best endgame gear.
However, things have changed in Patch 3.2. Echoing Strike apparently had a bug that caused the game to calculate its damage bonuses multiplicatively instead of additively. This has now been fixed.
On the other hand, the Blood Boil skill itself has not received any nerfs whatsoever. If anything, its tooltip now clearly defines that the radius of the skill maxes out at 7 yards when you put at least 10 points into it.
In terms of damage, Blood Boil was already quite damaging back then. Think about it as the Warlock’s version of Corpse Explosion (from the Necromancer), except it does not require any corpses lying around. Instead, it causes your minions’ blood to erupt, dealing damage to nearby enemies in the process.
The damage of Blood Boil can be amplified by raising its skill levels through skiller charms, Mang Song’s Lesson, and Ars Tor’Baalos, among others. If you prefer using a one-handed weapon, there is the Bloodpact Shard as a good alternative.
The Blood Boil Warlock build also has synergies with Summon Tainted, which is one of its primary damaging abilities. This particular minion now receives 20% increased fire damage per level of Blood Boil, which apparently was not applied prior to D2R Season 14.
With the right pieces of gear and ideal skill allocation, the Blood Boil Warlock is deemed one of the best endgame Warlock builds in D2R Season 14 for its explosive damage potential.
D2R Warlock Blood Boil Build: Skill Setup

- 20 points on Blood Boil
- 20 points on Summon Tainted
- 20 points on Engorge
- 16 points on Blood Oath
- 15 points on Bind Demon
- 10 points on Demonic Mastery
- Put 1 point on the following skills:
- Summon Goatman
- Death Mark
- Summon Defiler
- Hex: Bane
- Hex: Purge
- Hex: Siphon
- Sigil: Lethargy
- Sigil: Rancor
- Sigil: Death
Blood Boil and Summon Tainted are your main skills for dealing damage. The former makes the blood of your demons boil and erupt to deal both physical and fire damage to nearby monsters. The latter, on the other hand, summons a fire-based minion that deals considerable damage. With the bug fix implemented in Patch 3.2, Summon Tainted now enjoys the fire damage synergy from Blood Boil (at 20% fire damage per level).
If you’re wondering why a specific number of skill points is allocated to Demonic Mastery and Bind Demon, there is a reason for that. Blizzard has made a change in Patch 3.2 where you could only do a number of things when you put hard points into these skills.
For Demonic Mastery, putting 10 hard skill points into it will allow you to have three demons at your command. In the case of the Blood Boil Warlock Build, that is two Tainteds and one bound demon.
Speaking of which, you now need 15 hard points to Bind Demon if you want to have a unique monster ready to fight by your side. A unique Pit Lord from the Furnace of Pain is ideal, especially with the “Cursed” affix. This particular affix lets the bound demon cast Amplify Damage, which boosts the damage of Blood Boil for monsters that are affected by the said curse.
Take note that in Patch 3.2, "Cursed" demons are less reliable because their chance to cast Amplify Damage is greatly reduced, from 75% to 5%. A Pit Lord with the "Cursed" affix is still useful, but it should be treated as a bonus rather than the entire reason the Blood Boil Warlock build works.
After putting points into the required skills, put your remaining points into Blood Oath to further improve the HP of your demons, so that they can protect you from harm more effectively.
You can refer to our D2R Warlock Skill Trees guide for more information about these abilities.
Warlock Blood Boil D2R: Stats
- Strength: 156
- Dexterity: None
- Vitality: Spend the rest of the points here
- Energy: None
The Blood Boil Warlock only needs a couple of attributes to make it work. These are Strength (STR) and Vitality (VIT).
You have to spend 156 points on STR so that you can wield a 4os Monarch Shield. This will enable you to create the Spirit Runeword, which is necessary for pre-buffing Battle Command and Battle Orders.
Spend the rest of your attribute points on Vitality to improve your health pool. The more HP you have, the higher your chances of surviving in Hell Difficulty, even with modest gear.
Blood Boil Warlock D2R: How to Play
- Swap to Call to Arms and Spirit. Pre-buff with Battle Command and Battle Orders.
- Summon your Tainted Minion. Cast this twice if you have Demonic Mastery at level 10.
- Cast Hex: Siphon so that you regain some life every time an enemy is killed. Keep an eye on its duration and make sure that it is always up.
- Before using your primary ability, drop a Sigil: Death on the ground. After that, spam Blood Boil until the enemies are dealt with.
- If your Tainted Minions stray too far, use Death Mark to force them to teleport to you.
- Although your Tainted Minions won’t die from Blood Boil, they will still be killed by monsters. Spam Engorge to replenish their life as soon as they drop below 50%.
- A unique Pit Lord minion (Bound Demon) with Fanaticism is ideal because it boosts the damage and attack speed of your Tainteds.
D2R Blood Boil Warlock: FCR and FHR Breakpoints
The Blood Boil Warlock is only concerned about Faster Cast Rate (FCR) and Faster Hit Recovery (FHR). FCR is the most important because it influences how quickly you can cast your skills.
Aim for the following values when gearing your Blood Boil Warlock:
- Faster Cast Rate:
- 75% FCR (10 frames): This should be the minimum.
- 125% FCR (9 frames): This is what you should aim for.
- Faster Hit Recovery:
- 26% (9 frames): This is the minimum FHR for this build.
- 39% (8 frames): This is also good and doable, though you should not compromise gear for the sake of achieving this number.
Best Blood Boil Warlock D2R Gear
There are a couple of things you should keep in mind when gearing your Blood Boil Warlock in D2R Season 14. First, you want to raise the levels of both Blood Boil and Summon Tainted as high as you can. This is possible with the help of items that can provide “+ to All Skills” or “+ to Demon Skills.”
Second, you should have FCR on your items, wherever possible. Having 125% FCR makes the build feel comfortable and smooth to use. FHR is also mandatory, but having 26% Faster Hit Recovery is fine.
That said, here are the recommended items and viable alternatives for the Blood Boil Warlock build in Diablo II: Resurrected Season 14:

Mercenary
- Mercenary Type: Act 2 Desert Mercenary with Might Aura
- Weapon: Infinity
- Body Armor: Fortitude
- Helmet: Andariel’s Visage (with Ral Rune)
Boss Loop and Farming Spots
Act 1
- Mausoleum: Good for leveling and starter items.
- The Forgotten Tower: The Countess (the boss in this area) drops some good low- to mid-tier runes. The Forgotten Tower has a relatively good monster density as well.
- Andariel: Can drop good uniques and set items.
- The Secret Cow Level: Good monster density. Has a good chance of dropping runes
Act 2
- Stony Tomb: Also good for leveling. In Nightmare and Hell, this place has the lowest population of fire-immune monsters, making it ideal for the Blood Boil Warlock in D2R Season 14.
- Ancient Tunnels: Has a good concentration of loot at the end of the dungeon. Bring any magic find gear to improve your chances of getting valuable loot.
- Arcane Sanctuary: Although the layout is confusing, farming the Arcane Sanctuary is good, especially for acquiring the Key of Hate.
Act 3
- Travincal: The Council Members drop a considerable amount of gold when killed. Improve this by having some "Gold Find" items equipped.
- Durance of Hate (Level 3): Fight Mephisto for a chance to acquire a Charged Essence of Hatred (for Token of Absolution) and Madawc’s Ire (a needed item to open a portal to the Colossal Summit).
Act 4
- Chaos Sanctuary: Good monster density, but with very challenging monsters. Be careful around the Chaos Knights because they can cast Decrepify and Amplify Damage to you and your minions. Venom Lords are immune to fire damage, but that is no problem for Blood Boil (since half of the damage it deals is physical).
- The Chaos Sanctuary is also where you fight Diablo. Defeating him in Hell Difficulty might give you a chance to obtain the Burning Essence of Terror, which is needed to create the Token of Absolution.
Act 5
- Frigid Highlands: The Frigid Highlands are home to some terrifying superunique monsters, namely Eldritch the Rectifier, Sharptooth Slayer, and Eyeback the Unleashed. They may drop certain items that the Blood Boil Warlock can use in D2R Season 14.
- Nihlathak’s Temple: This is where you will find Pindleskin—a superunique monster that is best known for dropping valuable items. There is a reason why the D2R community calls it the “Pindle Runs” because you’ll want to slay Pindleskin as many times as possible until you are fully decked out.
- Halls of Vaught: Your primary goal here is to defeat Nihlathak. He is another superunique monster in Diablo II: Resurrected that is known to reward you with huge amounts of XP when killed. Plus, Nihlathak has a chance to drop the Key of Destruction, which is a necessary item to open up a portal to the Forgotten Sands, Furnace of Pain, and Matron’s Den (for the Pandemonium Event).
Since this build uses certain runewords to function optimally, you can read our D2R Rune Farming Guide to learn the best areas where you can farm runes.
D2R Blood Boil Warlock in D2R Season 14: Strengths and Weaknesses
+Good for Travincal Runs and Terror Zones. It excels in any place in Diablo II: Resurrected that has good monster density.
+Blood Boil deals fire and physical damage. If a monster is immune to fire damage, there is still physical damage that will kill it.
+The Blood Boil Warlock is positioned as a top contender in D2R Season 14, even after the changes in Patch 3.2.
-Average performance against Uber bosses.
-More hard points should now be allocated to Demonic Mastery and Bind Demon, unlike in the previous season, where these passives are “one-point wonders.”
-Using Spirit in the off-hand is no longer possible when you have a two-handed weapon equipped in the main hand. This forces you to use a Grimoire in the off-hand if you’re going to equip Mang Song’s Lesson.

FAQ
How Does Blood Boil Scale Its Damage, and What Affixes Should I Prioritize on My Gear?
Blood Boil deals 50% fire damage and 50% physical damage. The way you improve its damage further is by looking for the following affixes on your gear:
- -% to enemy fire resistance
- +% to fire skill damage
- + to Warlock Skills
- + to Demon Skills
- + to Blood Boil
Don’t forget to aim for that 125% FCR to make Blood Boil casting faster and smoother.
Do I Need to Have Both Physical and Fire Sunder Charms to Play This Build?
No. While RPGStash recommends that you have the Renewed Flame Rift in your inventory, this is primarily to provide you with “-10% to enemy fire resistance” and 24% FHR.
Monsters immune to physical damage can still be damaged with Blood Boil. It is also a good idea to bind a unique monster that has the “Cursed” affix because the Amplify Damage spell it casts can help break physical immunity on your enemies.
What is the Best Unique Monster to Bind Using ‘Bind Demon’?
Head to the Furnace of Pain and look for a unique Pit Lord that has the “Cursed” affix. Besides that, pay close attention to its aura to see if it has the Fanaticism Aura or not. Fanaticism improves the damage and attack speed of your Tainted Minions.
