The D2R Warlock Apocalypse build is worth playing in Season 14 if you want a high-APM fire caster with strong AoE, solid farming speed, and a clear gear path after Patch 3.2. The build centers on Apocalypse, Flame Wave, and Ring of Fire, using fire-scaling gear and Warlock utility skills to burn dense zones while staying mobile.

D2R Apocalypse Warlock—Patch 3.2 Context
The D2R Apocalypse Warlock is a build that is worth playing in Season 14 if you want a powerful spellcaster with strong fire damage, good AoE coverage, and a high-APM playstyle. Despite the nerfs to certain skills, RPGStash still recommends this build in D2R Season 14, so much so that it's still considered one of the best endgame builds in Diablo II: Resurrected.
So, what changed? Here is a rundown of the relevant changes to the Apocalypse Warlock build in Patch 3.2:
- Flame Wave
- Damage scaling is reduced by roughly 15%
- This translates to 14-19 damage at level 1 and 267-303 damage at level 20. This is down from 17-23 to 310-355.
- Ring of Fire
- Base maximum damage scaling has been reduced.
- This means that the damage of this skill now starts at 10 (at level 1) to 175 (at level 20). This is down from 12-181.
- Apocalypse
- The bug that caused the visuals of this skill to occasionally be duplicated for other players has been fixed.
- This is just a visual issue and does not affect the damage and mechanics of the spell.
- Demonic Mastery
- You can now have three minions at a time at level 10 (from level 20).
- However, this is only possible when you invest 10 hard points in the skill.
- Bind Demon
- No longer viable for this build because of the 20 hard points needed to bind a superunique monster.
The biggest change for the Apocalypse Warlock build in D2R Season 14 is that you no longer take Bind Demon. It has stopped becoming a “one-point” wonder because you now have to spend 20 hard points on it to bind Hephasto or Lister. That is just too much of a point investment, considering that 60 points are already reserved for your main skills. Because of this, taking Bind Demon for the purpose of binding superunique monsters is too expensive for this particular Apocalypse Warlock setup.
Fortunately, that is about it when talking about the stark differences between the current version of the build and the pre-Season 14 variant. If you'd like to know how the Apocalypse Warlock stacks up against the competition, you can read our D2R Tier list for Season 14.
D2R Apocalypse Warlock: Skill Setup

- 20 points on Apocalypse
- 20 points on Ring of Fire
- 20 points on Flame Wave
- 16 points on Summon Defiler
- 15 points on Blood Oath
- 10 points on Demonic Mastery
- Put 1 point on the following skills:
- Consume
- Summon: Tainted
- Sigil: Lethargy
- Sigil: Rancor
- Sigil: Death
- Hex: Bane
- Hex: Purge
- Hex: Siphon
Apocalypse and Flame Wave are key parts of your rotation. Cast Apocalypse first because it has a lengthy animation. Supplement that with Flame Wave until things go boom with Apocalypse.
Although you only invest one point in it, Summon Tainted is still useful for this D2R build. Its main purpose is for you to use Consume on it, and doing so provides you with a boost in fire damage, as well as a reduction in fire resistance to nearby enemies.
Ring of Fire is more of a utility skill that provides a bonus in damage for both Apocalypse and Flame Wave. It also has an added benefit of pushing enemies away, which is useful if you’re trying to interrupt their casting animation.
Sigil: Death is another complementary skill that you should cast on tougher enemies. When monsters within its area of effect drop to below 12%, they explode immediately, dealing fire damage in the process.
Summon Defiler is incredibly useful for the build. This minion “tags” up to five enemies. When one of those enemies receives damage in any way, that damage is then shared with others.
It goes without saying that the Apocalypse Warlock is a high-APM build, making it a fun and interesting build to try in D2R Season 14.

D2R Apocalypse Warlock: Stats
Strength: 156
Dexterity: None
Vitality: Spend the rest of your points here
Energy: None
A good amount of points is spent on Strength to let you wield a Monarch Shield for the Spirit Runeword. You don’t equip this to complement your main weapon, though. It is still useful as a means of pre-buffing your Apocalypse Warlock alongside Call to Arms. The reason for this is that Patch 3.2 implemented a change, where you can no longer equip a shield in the off-hand slot if you’re using a two-handed weapon.
As for the rest of your points, dump them on Vitality to increase your HP.
How to Play Apocalypse Warlock in D2R Season 14
- Pre-buff with Battle Command (twice) and Battle Orders.
- Cast Summon Tainted and use Consume on it to gain its benefits. Pay close attention to the duration of the buffs and recast if necessary.
- Hex: Siphon. This skill helps you regain life and mana by killing enemies. That is why it’s crucial that you have it up at all times.
- For your main rotation, always cast Apocalypse first. While Apocalypse is doing its animation, cast Flame Wave as many times as needed. Repeat this rotation until the enemy is dead.
- If there is a need to push enemies back (like they’re casting something deadly), use Ring of Fire. Otherwise, stick to Apocalypse and Flame Wave.
D2R Apocalypse Warlock: Breakpoints
Aim for 125% FCR if your gear can support it, since it reaches the preferred 9-frame casting breakpoint for the Apocalypse Warlock in D2R Season 14. If that is not possible with your current items, you can go for the lower FCR breakpoint next to that, which is 75%.
Faster Hit Recovery is just secondary to this build. If you have the right D2R items, you can get as high as 56% FHR without compromising any affixes. If that is too steep given your current gear, go for 39% FHR instead.
In summary, aim for the following breakpoints for the Apocalypse Warlock:
- Faster Cast Rate (FCR): 125% (9 frames)
- Faster Hit Recovery (FHR): 56% (7 frames) OR 39% (8 frames)
Best Gear for Apocalypse Warlock in D2R Season 14
The philosophy behind the gear for the Apocalypse Warlock in D2R Season 14 is about equipping as many items that provide + to Fire/Chaos/Warlock skills, FCR, and resistances. These include items like the Flickering Flame, Magefist, and Mang Song’s Lesson, among many others.
It is also worth noting that you put Defender’s Fire on your helmet, which is a new socketable item in Diablo II: Resurrected—Reign of the Warlock that not only increases your fire skill damage, but also reduces the fire resistance of enemies that surround you. Besides that, put Rainbow Facet: Fire jewels wherever possible to gain relatively the same bonuses.
In the endgame, you want to invest in a Renewed Flame Rift to break the enemy’s immunity to fire damage. This is especially useful in Act 4, where fire-immune monsters are quite common. The “Renewed” version provides more benefits to the build, including FHR, life, and MF.
Some of the gear requires a substantial amount of time to farm. Skip the grind by heading to our D2R Items store, where you’ll find exclusive discounts and just about everything that you will need to unlock the full potential of the Apocalypse Warlock.

Mercenary
- Mercenary Type: Act 2 Desert Mercenary with Might Aura
- Weapon: Infinity
- Body Armor: Fortitude
- Andariel’s Visage (with Ral Rune)
Best Farming Spots
Act 1
- The Secret Cow Level: Very high monster density with a good chance of obtaining runes.
- Mausoleum: Located within the Burial Grounds, the Mausoleum is filled with undead monsters that will get burned easily by your fire skills. In Nightmare and Hell Difficulty, you only see a minimal amount of fire-immune monsters here.
- Catacombs Level 4: You will fight Andariel in this area. Kill this boss for a chance to obtain uniques and set items that might be beneficial for your Apocalypse Warlock build.
Act 2
- Stony Tomb: This is an area that can be found within the Rocky Waste. The Stony Tomb is good for farming items because of its confined space. It also hosts a bunch of treasure rooms that may hold valuable loot.
- Maggot Lair: Hidden deep in the Far Oasis, the Maggot Lair is a good farming spot for the Apocalypse Warlock because of its relatively good monster density. When playing in Hell Difficulty, you will find about five to six elite packs in each level, making this place ideal for leveling up and obtaining items.
- Arcane Sanctuary: Don’t mind its annoying layout. The Arcane Sanctuary is where The Summoner resides. Kill him for a chance to acquire the Key of Hate, which is an essential component to access Uber Tristram.
Act 3
- Travincal: If you need a substantial amount of gold, killing the Council Members on repeat is the way to go.
- Durance of Hate Level 3: Fight Mephisto over and over again until you get the sets and unique items that you need for the build.
Act 4
- Chaos Sanctuary: Despite the presence of fire-immune monsters, the Chaos Sanctuary remains a prime farming spot for the Apocalypse Warlock. Just bring the Renewed Flame Rift with you before heading in.
Act 5
- Worldstone Keep/Throne of Destruction: Baal’s boss area will have you fight several waves of monsters. These waves not only give huge amounts of EXP, but they also have a high chance of dropping good gear.
- Halls of Vaught: Your primary goal here is to find Nihlathak. Defeat him for a good amount of EXP and a chance to obtain the Key of Destruction for the Pandemonium Tristram event.

Blood Boil vs. Apocalypse Warlock in D2R Season 14—When to Choose Each One
The Blood Boil and Apocalypse Warlock are considered two of the best endgame Warlock builds in D2R Season 14. Both of them utilize skills that deal damage in a relatively huge area, though they differ in the methods they use to achieve that.
Blood Boil is essentially the Warlock’s take on the Necromancer’s Corpse Explosion skill. The main difference is that it does not require any corpses whatsoever. Instead, the Warlock makes the blood of his demon minions boil to incredibly high temperatures, causing them to erupt and deal damage to nearby enemies.
On the other hand, the Apocalypse Warlock utilizes a few fire-based skills to defeat the enemy. He does this by casting Apocalypse first, followed by Flame Wave, and then Ring of Fire when the situation calls for it.
To help you decide whether to play the Blood Boil Warlock or the Apocalypse Warlock in D2R Season 14, here is some key information:
Choose the Apocalypse Warlock if…
- You want a spellcasting build that deals heavy fire damage.
- You want a build that uses skills that cover a wide area.
- You want a build that is very easy to gear and is good for leveling early on.
Choose the Blood Boil Warlock if…
- You want a build whose primary ability deals both fire and physical damage at the same time.
- You want a build that requires high APM (actions-per-minute) because of the many skills you have to pay attention to while playing.
- You want a build that takes the Bind Demon skill to give you the ability to bind a unique monster in Diablo II: Resurrected, thereby gaining its benefits.

FAQ
Is the Apocalypse Warlock a Good Leveling Build in D2R Season 14?
Yes. Flame Wave and Apocalypse both deal considerable amounts of damage, even with modest gear. Things go to a whole new level when you have access to its best items.
Can This Build Survive in Act 4 Hell Difficulty?
Yes, provided that you have your fire resistance sorted out. It is vital that you have the Renewed Flame Rift in your inventory because there are plenty of fire-immune monsters in certain parts of the Act, most notably in the Chaos Sanctuary.
I Constantly Run Out of Mana Early On. How Should I Solve This?
Spamming Flame Wave can drain your mana at a rapid rate at the beginning of your journey in Diablo II: Resurrected. To combat this, you can insert Tir Runes that you can farm from The Countess into your helmet to gain some mana per enemy killed.
Is the Apocalypse Warlock Still Viable in D2R Season 14?
Absolutely! Although there are nerfs made to the build’s primary skills (Flame Wave, Ring of Fire, and Apocalypse), it still performs admirably well. This is because the damage those skills have lost can be compensated for by equipping the items mentioned in the “Gear” section of this build guide. Besides that, you can consume your Tainted Minion to gain a boost in fire damage as well.
Is the Apocalypse Warlock Good for Farming Items in D2R Season 14?
Yes. RPGStash recommends this build because it can burn multiple enemies with ease by using Apocalypse and Flame Wave. Its farming potential truly comes to the fore when you have Enigma because you can then use Teleport to get to your preferred farming spot quickly.
