Diablo 2: Resurrected , Game Guides

Are you looking for a viable alternative to the Mosaic Assassin in D2R Season 13? In case you don’t know, the said build has been disabled in the latest ladder season, mainly because of the visual clutter that a fully-charged up Phoenix Strike skill can create (with the Mosaic Runeword, of course). It will surely come back at a later date, though I doubt it will still retain its power by then.
Anyway, if you love the Assassin Class in Diablo II: Resurrected so much and you are wondering what build you should play, then I’ve got something for you! Today, I am going to talk about the Lightning Sentry Assassin build for D2R Season 13!
How Does the Lightning Sentry Assassin Work in D2R Season 13?
The Lightning Sentry Assassin (aka Lightning Trapsin) is one of the best beginner-friendly builds in Diablo II: Resurrected. But make no mistake, this build is capable of destroying the new Heralds of Terror in D2R Season 13 without breaking a sweat!
Despite its name, this build actually uses two different trap skills. The primary skill is Lightning Sentry, which is a trap skill that enables the Assassin to lay down a device that discharges bolts of lightning. What’s cool about the lightning bolts is that they can potentially hit enemies twice before disappearing. This makes the Lightning Sentry capable of dispatching monsters efficiently.
The second trap that the Lightning Trapsin uses is Death Sentry. When placed on the ground, the Death Sentry can cast powerful Corpse Explosions, so long as corpses are within its line of sight.
Since there is a 5-trap limit in Diablo II: Resurrected, you should place four Lightning Sentry traps and 1 Death Sentry to maximize the damage potential of this build.
Stat Allocation
- Strength: 156 or 167
- Dexterity: None
- Vitality: Spend the rest of the points here
- Energy: None
When playing the Lightning Sentry Assassin in D2R Season 13, you just need to think about two stats: Strength and Vitality.
For the most part, you only need 156 Strength to wield a 4-socket Monarch Shield for Spirit. However, you can bump it up to 167 if you are planning to use the Shadow Dancer, which provides up to +2 to Shadow Disciplines.
Dump the rest of your stat points on Vitality. I have to admit that the Assassin does not have a lot of HP to work with relative to the other classes in Diablo II: Resurrected, so having hundreds of points in VIT can help address that.
Skill Breakdown

- 20 points on Lightning Sentry
- 20 points on Death Sentry
- 20 points on Charged Bolt Sentry
- 20 points on Shock Web
- 20 points on Fire Blast
- 5 Points on Burst of Speed
- Put 1 point on the following:
- Claw Mastery
- Fade
- Psychic Hammer
- Cloak of Shadows
- Mind Blast
You may have noticed that we put 20 points on several skills here. Well, that is because those skills improve the damage of Lightning Sentry and Death Sentry.
Although Fire Blast is a synergistic skill to the Death Sentry, it also serves as an effective skill to combat lightning-immune monsters in Hell Difficulty.
After maxing out Lightning Sentry, Death Sentry, and their synergistic skills, you have complete control over how you want to spend your remaining skill points.
The skill allocation I recommend for this build provides you with some utility skills that you can utilize when you are in a tough situation.
For example, you can cast Mind Blast to stun enemies that are chasing you. Additionally, activate Fade whenever you need a temporary boost in resistances.
Fun fact: Fade actually has a hidden bonus that improves your resistance to physical damage. This is true even though this increase is not explicitly stated on the stats page.
Breakpoints
The Lightning Sentry Assassin performs at its best when it achieves a relatively high IAS breakpoint. This is because attack speed can influence how quickly you can lay down your traps.
As you know, IAS breakpoints are a bit tricky in Diablo II: Resurrected because you have to take into account a number of things, including your choice of base weapon, IAS modifiers on your other pieces of gear, and the level of Burst of Speed you are using.
Luckily for you, I’ve got you covered! These IAS breakpoints assume that you have a level 5 Burst of Speed active:
- Crystal Sword: 30% IAS (9 frames)
- Scythe: 16% IAS
- Flail: 16% IAS
Because you are going to use the Enigma Runeword in the endgame, you need to have a relatively high Faster Cast Rate (FCR) to make Teleport a lot smoother to use. For this reason, aim for at least a 65% FCR (11 frames) or 102% FCR (10 frames).
Take note that attaining the higher FCR breakpoint will require you to sacrifice some D2R items that provide increased attack speed. Hence, you should decide on whether you want a faster trap-laying speed or a smoother time teleporting around maps.
Playstyle
As always with any build in D2R Season 13, pre-buff with Battle Command and Battle Orders from Call to Arms. For the Lightning Sentry Assassin, in particular, you want to include Burst of Speed because it significantly improves how quickly you can lay down your traps on the ground.
Speaking of traps, drop 4 Lightning Sentries and 1 Death Sentry when you see a group of monsters. This seems to be the consensus that many people believe to maximize the damage output of the Lightning Trapsin build.
If you are in Hell Difficulty and you encounter a monster that is immune to lightning damage, you can utilize Fire Blast to deal with it accordingly. Still drop a Death Sentry if this is the case, since it will cast Corpse Explosion if a dead monster is nearby.
Whenever you are in a bind, cast Mind Blast to stun enemies, and then use Fade for good measure. Just keep in mind that using Fade will cancel out Burst of Speed. That is why you should cast Burst of Speed again when you're in the clear.
Gear
You have several options when it comes to the choice of gear for the Lightning Trapsin. The two main things you should consider are "Increased Attack Speed" and "Faster Cast Rate." The former improves how fast you can lay down your Death Sentry and Lightning Sentry, while the latter is great for making Teleport (from Enigma) smoother to use.
If you feel that your Lightning Sentries lack the firepower to destroy enemies in Hell Difficulty, invest in gear that reduces the enemy's lightning resistance by a certain percentage. A good example of this is the Griffon's Eye with the Rainbow Facet (Lightning) jewel socketed into it.
It is also worth mentioning that the Lightning Trapsin can either use a sword+shield (Crescent Moon and Spirit) or a self-wielded Infinity (Scythe). The sword and shield combo is great for a more balanced approach.
However, Infinity is also awesome for damage, as it reduces the resistances of nearby monsters by 85%, and adds up to -55% to enemy lightning resistance on top of that. It all depends on whether you want more attack speed and FCR or more damage.

- Helmet: Andariel's Visage (with Ral Rune)
Have your A2 Mercenary wield the Infinity (Giant Thresher) if you are using the Crescent Moon and Spirit (Monarch). If you are using the Infinity yourself, give him the Insight (Thresher) for that Meditation Aura.
