In fact, what's even harder than getting to 99 Magic is finding the best gear for your Mage. There's an assortment of gear in the game and it's no secret that getting the best ones will require a lot of time, effort, and grinding. 

Now of course, you'll need a lot of OSRS gold to get the best of the best on this list. We'll hook you up with some if you're short on budget. Before we show the best in slot Mage gear in OSRS, let's talk about how Mage gear actually works.

Magic Gear In OSRS Explained

When looking for Magic gear in OSRS, there are essentially two things that you need to look for. First is Magic Bonus. Similar to melee bonuses for Stab, Slash, Crush, and Range type damage, this helps increase your accuracy for this certain type of attack. By increasing your Magic Bonus, you're making it likely for your Spells to hit, thereby increasing your overall damage as well.

Next up is Magic Damage Bonus. This is a modifier that increases the overall hit or damage that your spells do. Magic Damage Bonus is measured in percentages instead of points unlike other stat bonuses for gear. There are a few gears in the game that provides Magic Damage Bonus which we'll show below.

Ideally, you should have a perfect mix of both but many veteran players would suggest going for Magic Damage instead. With the right technique and weapon, you can cast several spells in a short period. Even with a lot accuracy, most or some of those spells are bound to hit. Having a high magic damage bonus ensures that you're getting the most out each of your hits.

Best In Slot Magic Gear

For this part of the guide, we're going to show the best in slot equipment for each of the slots in the game. Take note that we're going to focus mainly on improving your DPS for a mage build more than anything else. Defense is only going to be secondary as in OSRS, offense is the best defense.

  1. Best In Slot Weapon - Sanguinesti's Staff 

Sanguinesti's staff is understandably the most powerful staff in the game. Thanks to its massive +25 Magic Bonus, it's easily the best staff to get in the late game and is currently unbeatable as of this writing. It's also the hardest to get as it's a rare drop from the rewards from beating the Theater of Blood Raid in OSRS. You might want to find the right group to accompany you so that you can get multiple runs in.

Aside from its solid damage, the Sanguinesti staff also possesses a passive ability which has a 1 in 6 chance of healing you whenever you damage a target. The heal given is half of how much damage you deal. This essentially provides you with a high level of survivability that most mage builds don't have.

The staff has a built-in spell that's more powerful than what the Trident of the swamp has. The healing of the Sanguinesti staff is perfect in many situations such as the various dungeons in the game, as well as the raids. For this staff, it's often recommended to have a high Magic Bonus as well.

  1. Best In Slot - Weapon Alternative - Kodai Wand

If you prefer the fast casting of spells and want to use a wand, the best in slot in the game is the Kodai Wand. Like the Sanguinesti staff, this is a rather hard find as it's a reward from one of the raids in the game which in this case, is the Chamber of Xeric. It's the strongest wand in the game that requires 80 Magic to use. 

What you get for your efforts however is a wand that can autocast spells from the standard, Ancient Magicks, and Arceuus combat spells spellbooks. It also provides you with unlimited water runes which makes if very efficient to use in most cases. While the Sanguinesti's staff has a chance to heal you, the Kodai Wand has a 15% chance to ignore any rune costs whenever you cast a spell that deals damage.

To create this wand, you'll need to get a Kodai insignia as a rare drop from the Chambers of Xeric. Once done, you'll need to combine that with a master wand. Keep in mind that this process is irreversible but there's little reason to choose the master wand over the kodai wand anyway.

  1. Best In Slot Armor Set - Ancestral Robes

While you're trying to get the Kodai Insignia, you may as well give the Chambers of Xeric a little more effort so that you can get the Ancestral Robes as well. This is the best armor set for mages in the game and it fills up your head, body, and leg slots for your build. 

Many players will argue that the Ahrim The Blighted's set is better because of its special unique set bonus but in our opinion, you'll want the Ancestral Robes if you really want to max out your power. Aside from having decent defense bonuses for various damage types, this set also gives you a 6% Magic Damage Bonus which is relatively large for armor pieces.

  1. Best In Slot Neck - Occult Necklace

In terms of overall damage bonuses, you can't go wrong with the Occult Necklace. It adds a whopping +12 to your Magic Bonus and 10% to Magic Bonus damage. This is the best DPS necklace for mages in OSRS right now and luckily, it's not that hard to get.

You simply need to get it as a drop from a smoke devil which isn't that hard to beat. Once you have the necklace, you'll need to get your Magic level to 70 before you can actually use the necklace. You can get this as early as the mid-game but the necklace itself is sure to last you for the rest of your OSRS journey.

  1. Best In Slot Cape - Imbued God Capes

The imbued versions of the three god capes are the best in slot capes for Mages. It doesn't matter which one of the god capes you choose as long as it's the imbued version. This cape provides +15 Magic Bonus, as well as a 2% Magic Damage Bonus, making it the perfect cape for those going for a DPS build.

To get a god cape, you need to do the Mage Arena I miniquest. After finishing the penultimate fight of the quest, you'll then have to choose a god to pray to between Zamorak, Guthix, and Saradomin. Since the stats are the same, you should then choose one that will benefit your god staff the most. To make the imbued version of the god capes, you'll need to get materials from Justiciar Zachariah, Porazdir, and Derwen, who you can all fight during the Mage Arena II quest.

Even the basic version of the God Capes are strong enough on their own but for late game exploits, it's best to go with the imbued version.

  1. Best In Slot Boots - Eternal Boots

To get this boots, you'll first have to get the Infinity Boots which is the second best boots for Mages in OSRS. It's only available through the Mage Training Arena minigame for the following points:

  • 120 Telekinetic pizazz points
  • 120 Alchemist pizazz points
  • 1,200 Enchantment pizazz points
  • 120 Pizazz points

Once you have these boots, you can then use an eternal crystal and combine it with infinity boots. You'll need level 60 Runecraft and Magic for this to work. The result are a pair of boots that go perfectly with the end-level Magic build in OSRS.

  1. Best In Slot Gloves - Tormented Bracelet

This pair of gloves not only provides you with the best magical damage for any Magic gloves, it also gives you an additional 5% Magic Damage bonus on top of it all. What's great is that the effect of the gloves stack with other boosts, making it perfect for many builds in the game. 

It might just be one of the easiest best in slot magic gear to get from this list so make sure to get it as soon as possible for that huge DPS boost. You'll simply need a zenyte bracelet and then use level 7 Enchant on it. Before that however, you must have 20 soul and blood runes, a cosmic rune, and level 93 Magic. These are still rather easy to achieve requirements as compared to other best in slot items.

  1. Best In Slot Ring - Magus Ring

This ring has the highest Magic attack bonus out of all the rings in the game. Getting is isn't an easy task though as you'll have to beat Duke Sucellus during the Desert Treasure II quest before you can get it. If you try to wear the ring before beating the boss, you'll get a message on your chatbox saying that the power of the ring feels unfamiliar to you.

To create the ring, you'll need to merge the seers icon and the magus vestige first. Then, grab a ring mould, three chromium ingots, and the magus icon to a furnace to create this all-too-powerful ring. The requirements for creating it are rather steep though as you'll need to level 90 Magic and 80 crafting for it.

  1. Best In Slot Off-Hand - Elidini's Ward (f)

This is another tough best in slot item to get for mages. First off, the fortified version of Elidini's Ward doesn't just come with aesthetic changes, you'll also get a ton of defensive and bonuses, and more. The Book of the Occult provides even more damage for mages but Elidini's Ward (f) is hard to pass on because it makes your mage more capable of surviving tough battles.

You can get the basic Elidini's Ward from the Tombs of Amascut Raid first but you'll have to be patient (or lucky) as the drop rates for the item are abysmal. One tip we can share to you is to simply find a party that's already well-experienced in the raid as they can make multiple runs much easier on your end.

Once you have Elidni's Ward, you can then combine it with an Arcane Sigil to fortify it. This requires level 90 in Smithing and Prayer, on top of 10,000 soul runes. Once done, you'll have one of the best items in the game for your mage. It's definitely something that's hard to replace but if you want more damage, switch this up with a Book of the Occult.
