Old School RuneScape is a long marathon with only a few clear checkpoints showing where your account currently stands: early game, mid-game, and late game. The mid-game is arguably the longest and most important stage of the three. This is where many OSRS players slow down, not because the content is difficult, but because it’s unclear what to upgrade next. With dozens of weapons and armour pieces competing for your gold, a single wrong purchase can waste millions. This guide breaks down the most impactful mid-game upgrades, highlighting which weapons, armour, and untradeables provide the biggest power spikes and should be prioritised first.

Some of these upgrades cost tens of millions of GP. If you’re short on gold and want to avoid weeks of grinding, you can check out our OSRS Gold Store for safe and fast gold delivery.

Top Upgrade Priority

  • Melee: Osmumten’s Fang, Blood Moon Armour
  • Ranged: Toxic Blowpipe, Crystal Armour
  • Magic: Eye of Ayak, Confliction Gauntlets

What Counts as Mid-Game?

OSRS mid-game progression

Mid-game is the point where your account’s damage output increases dramatically and you start tackling more demanding bosses and PvM content. In general, mid-game players have combat stats in the 70s to low 80s and have completed key quests such as Recipe for Disaster, King’s Ransom, and Dragon Slayer II. The most defining feature of this stage is gear progression, as your upgrade choices directly determine your DPS, efficiency, and access to higher-level content.

Best Mid-Game Weapons For Each Style

Melee

Dual Macuahuitl

Dual Macuahuitl

Requiring level 70 Attack and 75 Strength to equip this weapon is an absolute must-have for any mid-game account. This dual-wield weapon will be the everyday weapon that you are going to be using for Slayer creatures and training. Here is what makes it such a great weapon for casual use:

  • A great crush weapon that can be used against all enemies that are weak to crush.
  • Hits twice, making it great against enemies with low defence and training.
  • You can combine it with its armour set blood moon armor to get the set effect that can allow you to attack faster, increasing both your damage per second and experience gain.
Verdict

This weapon is your main training weapon, and you should get it if you are looking to level up your melee stats fast.

Osmuten’s Fang

Osmuten’s Fang

Osmuten’s Fang is a rare drop from the Tombs of Amascut raid and is one of the greatest weapons in the game despite being so cheap. Requiring level 82 Attack to equip, it is even better than a scythe of Vitur in certain encounters. This weapon will be your friend while tackling hard-to-kill enemies and bosses, even in the late game. Here is why it's so good against tough creatures:

  • The fang is an incredibly accurate stab weapon. It has a passive effect that rolls the accuracy twice whenever you are hitting an enemy, meaning you are two times more likely to hit your target.
  • Fang also has another passive effect that makes it even more consistent while dealing damage. This passive effect makes it so that the damage fang deals is rolled between 15% to 85% of its max damage, meaning you won’t ever be hitting low numbers.
  • It also has a special attack that further increases its accuracy and deals full damage instead of 85%.
Verdict

This weapon alone can carry you through most mid-game bosses and remains relevant into the late game. This should be your number 1 priority to get.

Bandos God Sword

Bandos God Sword

Bandos God Sword requires level 75 Attack to wield and hosts one of the strongest special attacks for PvM in the game. You will be mainly using this weapon against boss encounters with high defence, such as the Corporeal Beast. It has a special attack that reduces your enemy's stats, making it ideal for tough encounters.

Verdict

This weapon is only required if you are doing high-tier boss encounters; don’t spend your money on it if you are not doing any.

Dragon Warhammer

Dragon Warhammer

Another stat-reducing weapon that is a must-have for some boss encounters. Equipping it requires level 60 Strength, and unlike the Bandos Godsword, which can reduce all stats by flat amounts, the dragon warhammer reduces only defence by 30% with its special attack, making it ideal for quickly reducing an enemy's defences for increased accuracy.

Verdict

This weapon is only required if you are doing high-tier boss encounters; don’t spend your money on it if you are not doing any.

Ember Light

Ember Light

Emberlight is a demonbane weapon that requires level 77 Attack to equip and 74 Smithing to create. It is the strongest melee weapon that can be used against demons in the game. It requires completion of the quest While Guthix Sleeps and provides a whopping 70% buff to damage and accuracy against demons. It also has a special attack that reduces your target's attack, defence, and strength by 5% this effect is tripled against demons.

Verdict

This weapon is only used against demons, so you don’t need to rush to it. It should be last on your melee priority list.

Ranged

Toxic Blowpipe

Toxic Blowpipe

The toxic blowpipe is the single strongest mid-game upgrade you can get for your account. This weapon requires level 75 Ranged to equip and is used in all sorts of content from Slayer to Bossing. Blowpipe has a fast attack speed and can venom enemies. It uses darts and zulrah scales as ammunition, so it has a small upkeep. You should use amethyst darts for most content in the game for a lower upkeep cost, but make sure to switch to dragon darts if you are doing end-game content like raids. Blowpipe also has a special attack that deals increased damage and heals the player by 50% of the damage dealt, making it great for sustaining in some fights.

Verdict

Blowpipe alone can carry you through most of your Ranged requirements. It should be your number 1 priority to get this item.

Bow of Faerdhinen

Bow of Faerdhinen

The elven bow of Faerdhinen is the single best bow you can get your hands on in the mid-game. It requires level 80 Ranged and 70 Agility to equip and does not require arrows to use. It requires crystal shards to charge and has a passive effect that makes it the king of bows in the mid-game. This passive effect activates when the bow is used alongside a full set of crystal armour, and it provides the bow with 15% damage and 30% accuracy boost when the full set is equipped.

Verdict

This weapon is required for boss encounters, such as the Inferno or the God Wars Dungeon. If you’re not thinking of doing such content, you can hold off on buying this item.

Armadyl Crossbow

Armadyl Crossbow

Not every fight will require a bow or a blowpipe, and in such fights, it is important to have a decent crossbow. The Armadyl crossbow fits perfectly between the early game and the late game. Requiring level 70 Ranged to wield, this weapon is mainly used with ruby bolts (e) against creatures that have high health. The special attack of this crossbow doubles your accuracy and chance of the bolts' enchantment procing.

Verdict

This item should be your lowest priority, as it is useful in niche encounters.

Magic

Dragon Hunter Wand

Dragon Hunter Wand

Requiring level 65 Magic to equip, this magic weapon is the best weapon that you can use against dragons. It provides a 75% accuracy and a 40% damage buff against all dragons. It is great for completing any dragonkin slayer tasks, as most dragons are weak to elemental magic.

Verdict

Prioritise buying this item if you are power levelling your Slayer.

Nightmare Staff

Nightmare Staff

Requiring level 72 Magic and 50 Hitpoints to equip, this weapon will be your staff for using Ancient Magicks. This weapon is great for a couple of reasons; firstly, it has a nice 15% magic damage bonus, secondly, it can cast ancient Magicks, and lastly, you can upgrade this staff with orbs in the late-game to have one of the best elemental magic staffs in the game.

Verdict

This should be your last priority to buy.

Eye of Ayak

Eye of Ayak

Arguably, the most important upgrade you can get for your account in terms of magic in the mid-game. This weapon requires level 83 Magic to wield and is the magic equivalent of the toxic blowpipe. It is the second most powerful charged staff in the game with a special attack that can lower enemies' magic defence. Charged staves are must-haves for high-level encounters such as bosses or raids.

Verdict

This should be your priority to buy, as it is an incredibly powerful weapon against pretty much every encounter you can face. It will carry you through the rest of the game.

Best Mid-Game Armours For Each Style

Melee

Blood Moon Armour Set

Blood Moon Armour Set

Long gone are the days of the mid-game Bandos armour set; nowadays, the best armour set to get in the mid-game is the blood moon set. This set requires level 75 Strength and 50 Defence to equip and provides the same strength bonus as Bandos while being much cheaper, albeit with less defensive bonuses, but defence hardly ever matters in the mid-game. If you use the dual macuahuitls alongside this armour set, you will get the set bonus of having 33% chance of hitting a tick faster, which makes this set the best to train stats in.

Verdict

Make this set your priority to get, as it will help you in all melee encounters and will help you speed up your melee experience gain.

Slayer Helmet (i)

Slayer Helmet (i)

Slayer helmet (i) is the single most useful helmet in the entire game and is a must-have if you haven’t gotten it already. It requires level 10 Defence to equip and is used against all Slayer task creatures, whether it is a boss or a regular mob. It provides 15% damage and accuracy bonus to Magic and Ranged, and 16% to Attack and Strength.

Verdict

The Slayer helmet will be useful for as long as OSRS exists, so get it as early as you can.

Neitiznot Faceguard

Neitiznot Faceguard

This helmet requires level 70 Defence and the completion of The Fremennik Exiles to equip. It has the second-highest strength bonus out of any helmet, just behind Torva. The key thing that makes this helmet so good is the fact that it has no negative attack bonuses for any style, making it suitable for hybrid encounters.

Verdict

This is a niche upgrade that should be one of your last priorities.

Ferocious Gloves

Ferocious Gloves

Ferocious gloves require level 80 Attack and Defence to equip, and they are the best-in-slot gloves for melee. To create these gloves, however, you must first complete the Dragon Slayer 2 quest. It provides a +4 accuracy boost and a +2 strength boost over Barrows gloves.

Verdict

Another minor upgrade, should be one of your last upgrades in your priority list.

Amulet of Fury

Amulet of Fury

At this point in the game, you should start upgrading your amulet slot as well. The first upgrade you should focus on getting is an amulet of fury, which is quite cheap as well. This amulet is a great hybrid amulet providing good offensive and defensive bonuses. Upgrading from a fury to a torture should be one of your lowest priorities.

Verdict

This should be your first upgrade to get due to how great it is compared to a glory and how cheap it is.

Ranged

Crystal Armour

Crystal Armour

The crystal armour set requires level 70 Defence and 50 Agility to equip and is the best mid-game ranged armour set in the game. Wearing the full set alongside a bow of Faerdhinen will increase your damage by 15% and accuracy by 30%. You will be using this armour set against all sorts of bosses that are weak to range.

Verdict

This set will be able to handle any boss encounter you face until you reach the end-game, so definitely a priority.

Necklace of Anguish

Necklace of Anguish

The necklace of anguish is currently the best necklace you can use for Ranged. It requires level 75 Hitpoints to equip and provides a +5 ranged strength and +15 ranged accuracy.

Verdict

Ranged strength and accuracy are hard to come by, and this provides both. Combining this with either void or crystal armour is extremely powerful, so make it your priority to get this after you finish collecting your armour sets.

Ava’s Assembler

Ava’s Assembler

Ava’s assembler is an untradable item that requires level 70 Ranged and the completion of the Dragon Slayer 2 quest. It is the upgraded version of Ava’s accumulator, providing double its ranging bonuses. The main reason this upgrade is so good, however, is its increased ammunition collection rate, which will save you millions of gold in the long run. You will need this upgrade even if you have Dizana’s quiver to have the ammo-saving effect.

Verdict

This should be at the bottom of your priority list, as its counterparts will do just fine.

Elite Void

Elite Void

We have our crystal armour for some of the boss encounters, but what about the ones that require a crossbow or blowpipe to kill? This is where the elite void comes in. It is an untradable armour set that can be obtained from the Pest Control Minigame if you have completed the hard Western Provinces diary. It is one of the best Ranged armours in the game rivaling even a full Masori set in certain encounters like the Doom of Mokhaiotl. It provides a +12.5% ranged damage and accuracy.

Verdict

This should be your top priority as it is essentially a free strong range armour set.

Magic

Virtus Robes

Virtus Robes

Virtus robes set is a powerful magic set that requires level 78 Magic and 75 Defence to equip. It is the strongest magic set in the game if you are using ancient magicks, and it is the second-best magic set in the game if you are using any other spellbook. This armour set will cover all your magic needs and will allow you to breeze through any barrage tasks.

Verdict

This should be your second most important gear piece that you should get after the gauntlets.

Confliction Gauntlet

Confliction Gauntlet

These gauntlets are the best in slot magic gauntlets. They are the upgraded variant of the tormented bracelet and require level 90 Hitpoints to equip. The main reason we are spending so much money to get this upgrade over the bracelet is the gauntlet's passive effect. The passive effect is similar to Osmuten’s Fang. It makes it so that the spell you cast after missing a spell will roll the accuracy twice, making it twice as accurate. This effect works only with single-handed staves, so it works just perfectly with the Eye of Ayak, the fastest and strongest single-handed staff in the game.

Verdict

These gauntlets, alongside a good magic weapon, will carry you through the mid-game. It is a top priority to get.

Conclusion

The mid-game of Old School Runescape is all about getting those sweet strength bonuses over accuracy and defence. You should always prioritise getting the weapons over the armours first to really increase your damage output. If you are looking to skip the mid-game of the game and head straight into the late game, you can check out our OSRS Accounts Store for all sorts of accounts that will suit your needs!
